JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Coordinator of Accounting
Location: Division Administration
Reports to: Director of Finance
FLSA Status: Exempt
Summary:
Performs responsible, complex, detail, technical work maintaining general ledger, processing financial transactions, payroll, and financial reporting. Work is performed under general supervision of the Director of Finance.
Essential Functions:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), reconciling general ledger accounts and payroll withholdings, proficiency with financial accounting systems, advanced skills in Excel and Google Sheets, internal controls, accounting terminology and methods, standard office procedures, practices, and equipment.
Abilities to strong planning, analytical problem solving, and organizational skills and keen attention to detail, tasks prioritization and meeting deadlines, work independently and manage multiple tasks/projects efficiently, outstanding interpersonal, team work, and communication skills and work under pressure, balance and prioritize work and meet multiple deadlines.
Skills in spreadsheets including Excel, Google Sheets, accurate arithmetical computations, operate a variety of office equipment and software including computer, printer, and copier.
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor's degree with major coursework in accounting, finance, business or public administration and at least five (5) years of relevant experience or any equivalent combination of experience or training. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred. Possession of a valid driver's permit.

Essential Functions:
- Supports and works in the time and attendance system.
- Performs payroll processing duties including error checks, payroll deposit file, post payroll, payroll encumbrances, and payroll voids. Serves as back up to Payroll Specialist to processing payroll.
- Responsible for processing, reconciling, and payment of payroll related bills including child support, garnishments, optional life insurance, vision insurance, dental insurance, Virginia Retirement System (VRS) retirement, health savings account, etc.
- Prepares the quarterly and annual payroll reports including 941s, Virginia Employment Commission (VEC), VA ST-16, and W-2s.
- Monitors Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements. Implements GASB standards as they are applicable to the school division financial statements. Maintains schedules or prepares general journal entries for the standards.
- Assist with the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Report.
- Prepare work papers and other analyses to support year-end closing and audit process including reconciliation of 941 reports corresponding to the fiscal year to the general ledger wages, compensated absences, fixed assets, and payroll accruals.
- Maintain the school division's fixed assets accounting system.
- Analyze and reconcile periodic trial balances including reconciling sub-ledger to the general ledger, verifying asset and equity balances, and researching/correcting discrepancies. Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
