Sterile Processing Technician
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general supervision decontaminates/cleans/processes/assembles/ sterilizes/stores/distributes reusable medical devices and supplies used in patient care. Assembles/dispatches surgical case carts.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Decontaminates/cleans reusable equipment in accordance with department and OSHA standards
Assembles/sterilizes/stores/distributes reusable medical devices and supplies for patient care
Maintains Sterile Processing records; adheres to procedures in accordance with department and OSHA guidelines when working with ethylene oxide
Organizes/assembles and dispatches surgical case carts.
Initiates/receives/relays calls/messages;
Assists with new employee orientation;
Adheres to safety and infection control guidelines;
Communicates/interfaces with hospital personnel and others;
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Must be able to speak and write the English language.
A basic knowledge of reading, writing and math is required in order to follow and give written and oral instructions and perform job duties.
Ability to communicate effectively with others; ability to exercise some judgment in the work environment.
Ability to organize and prioritize to insure daily work load is carried out through individual or cooperative efforts; ability to react and perform under stress and emergency situations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Completion of a High School education or equivalent.
Four to six months of related experience.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Long periods of standing, repetitive bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, walking, stretching. Frequent exposure to temperatures ranging from 60 degrees to 85 degrees F., for periods of up to two to three hours. Frequent exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Characterized as light work requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time), and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time), and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (2/3 or more of the time) to move objects.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds in handling genesis pans and ethylene oxide baskets.
Ability to move 30 gallon soap keg, on casters, into place; ability to handle applicable hospital
equipment.
