Somerville YMCA is looking for great individuals who want to make a difference in the lives of the school aged children in our communities. Becoming a Before/After School Counselor will give you an opportunity to expand on skills you will need later on in life including leadership, communication, problem solving, and more.
A Before/After School Counselor will help the children with homework, create a fun and safe environment, and bring new ideas and games to the program. You will have experience working with children in a fun and engaging environment and will need to be comfortable handling difficult situations as needed. You will also have the ability to learn and think critically and quickly to handle situations as they arise. This job is fully on-site, not remote.
Main Functions:

  • Create and maintain a fun environment for children to work and play productively and comfortably, and have full access to all necessary materials
  • Demonstrate leadership and be a positive influence and role model to colleagues and staff
  • Communicate issues related to students to Director of Youth Development
  • Supervise volunteers in partnership with fellow staff
  • With Director of Youth Development, support parent/family communication and follow-up
  • Supervise and manage daily snack
  • Maintain and track supplies for programs and activities including equipment and program supplies; administrative supplies; and first aid equipment
  • Implement safety measures/regulations in compliance with NJ Department of Children & Families - Office of Licensing & Community Partners
  • Ensure implementation of the health and safety policies that pertain to program participants and staff at all times, including follow through on all incident reports and document filing
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  • Support efforts of promotion and publicity of all YMCA programs
  • Ensure that all Emergency Procedures are carried out in accordance with Somerville YMCA procedures
  • Ensure that program provides a positive image of the YMCA within the community, in accordance with the mission and philosophy of the Somerville YMCA

Before Care:
  • 7am-8:45am
After Care:
  • 2:40pm-5:15pm
  • 2:40pm-5:30pm
  • 2:40pm - 6:00pm
You are not required to work both Before and After Care shifts. You may choose to work just before school, just after school, or both!
