Position Description:
The Medical Assistant for JWCH's Pasadena Clinic is a full-time position under the direct supervision of the Clinic Administrator or designated Clinic Designee. Within the regulatory scope of practice, the Medical Assistant assists in the provision of direct patient care by performing routine patient care procedures and technical supportive functions, including phlebotomy duties. Medical Assistants at Wesley Health Care Centers work alongside our healthcare teams to provide compassionate care to patients in a clinical setting. Principal Responsibilities:
  1. Performs routine (noninvasive) patient care functions as prescribed by licensed healthcare personnel following established clinic policies and procedures within the defined scope of education, training, and responsibilities.
  2. Collects and records patient data, including height, weight, BMI, temperature, pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure, pulse oximeter, and peak flow measurement, in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  3. Performs lab tests, including finger sticks, after appropriate training and verification of competency.
  4. Conducts phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture, in compliance with approved medical protocols to collect blood samples for testing.
  5. Documents all blood draws and labels samples accurately.
  6. Administers immunizations and all medications per provider's order after a licensed healthcare professional verifies the correct medication and dosage.
  7. Performs PPD skin test placements, documents measurement of PPD skin tests, and reports information directly to the provider or to the Registered Nurse.
  8. Applies and removes bandages and dressings as required.
  9. Applies principles of aseptic technique and infection control according to policy and procedures.
  10. Provides basic health information and education to patients using established policies and procedures.
  11. Works with patients on self-management goals as defined in the case management contract and/or under the direction of a licensed healthcare provider.
  12. Performs routine clerical functions as assigned.
  13. Takes and routes phone calls timely and efficiently.
  14. Schedules routine and follow-up appointments.
  15. Accurately files all patient labs, X-rays, EKG results, and other documents after the provider has reviewed and signed off on the information.
  16. Maintains clean and stocked patient exam rooms and work areas.
  17. Maintains confidentiality at all times.
  18. Participates in assigned staff and other meetings, including quality improvement, case conferences, and in-service meetings.
  19. Participates in all safety programs, which may include assignment to an emergency response team.
  20. Performs other duties and tasks as required or assigned.
Requirements:
  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant school with a current MA certificate.
  3. Phlebotomy Certification
  4. Minimum one year of Phlebotomy experience
  5. Experience with effective puncture techniques
  6. Verification of appropriate hours in approved Medical Assistant course to perform venipuncture.
  7. Current BLS certificate from the American Heart Association.
  8. Willing and able to work with diverse population including low income, homeless, trauma-involved individuals.
  9. Excellent written, oral, organizational and documentation skills.
  10. Two years' experience in an ambulatory clinic preferred.
  11. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  1. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  2. Manual dexterity for tasks such as venipuncture
  3. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  4. Ability to bend and reach as needed for patient care
  5. Clear vision for detailed tasks
  6. Effective hearing and verbal communication skills
