We are looking for a dedicated Shift Manager, Asset Maintenance to join our team in Los Angeles, CA. The Shift Manager, Asset Maintenance is responsible for the management of all aspects of the maintenance of Quay Cranes, RTG’s and Spreaders. This position is also responsible to assist with cost-effective maintenance and proper communication with AM contractors and APMT’s Operations team.

Key responsibilities:

  • Directly manage AM contractors and union labor in all areas of maintenance operations, focusing on the maintenance and repair of terminal Quay cranes, RTG cranes, and spreaders.
  • Ensure that all critical preventative and corrective maintenance is being planned and completed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Supervise and direct labor in maintaining a safe and clean working environment through adherence to OSHA and safety procedures and perform frequent inspections of all equipment.

  • Ensure the terminal operation is supplied with properly maintained equipment through direct interaction and communication with fellow team members in other functional areas (i.e., yard, marine, lines, vendors, and providers).
  • Manage real-time troubleshooting and repair of critical equipment; effectively communicate equipment status with the operations team and develop operational contingencies as necessary.
  • Support mechanics in troubleshooting any PLC, Drives, or electrical issues if needed.
  • Schedule, assign, and approve all work hours, including overtime for mechanics related to the Crane shop. Investigate and implement mid-term cost-saving solutions for areas of excessive repair requirements to maximize profitability of the terminal.
  • Create, maintain, and manage schedules for preventative maintenance to maximize the asset life and longevity of invested capital.
  • Support the disciplinary process when needed, including contributing to investigations into personnel who are not carrying out assigned work properly or safely and recommending training or disciplinary action as necessary.
  • Maintain a working and professional relationship with ILWU labor (including OCU), and be knowledgeable in labor contracts and grievance procedures. Resolve on-the-job labor issues with the ILWU locals and represent the interests of the Company.
  • Perform data analysis to support short-term and long-term strategy.
  • Address any grievance brought to your attention in an expeditious manner by investigating the grievance and using your independent judgment and discretion to address the grievance in the best interests of the company.
  • Use Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for parts and materials associated with maintaining terminal equipment.
  • Capture true cost of maintenance by equipment number including 100% of parts and labor for each work order. Control work orders and ensure that APMT is maintaining preventative and corrective maintenance that is critical to the equipment.
  • Control and reduce maintenance and materials costs through management of labor, labor contractors, and vendors.
  • Review and approve financial expenditures and requisitions. Review and approve invoices for payment.
  • Interface with equipment suppliers to develop and review equipment specifications.
  • Monitor the performance of the equipment and its manufacturer following delivery to the terminal. Responsible for performing on-site quality inspections during the manufacturing process.
  • Manage customer relationships with vendors, operations group, and the lines, maintaining timely and transparent communication with each.

Who we are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in a related field or equivalent professional experience is required.
  • Five (5) years in terminal operations, data analysis, or asset management.
  • Electrical engineering experience strongly preferred, especially in PLC and drives.
  • Strong managerial, supervisory, team building, motivating, and decision-making skills to direct the union labor workforce and vendors on a daily basis to achieve operational goals.
  • Ability to effectively manage conflicting goals, resource conflicts, and make correct real-time decisions.
  • Thinks strategically and has a long-term vision to support the business direction.
  • Ability to set operational plans with short-term impact by maintaining standards that lead to high performance and execution.
  • Ability to modify important changes rapidly.
  • Able to manage peers, contractors, and union labor using excellent communication and follow-up skills.
  • Broad knowledge in asset management discipline.
  • Knowledge of Union labor Collective Bargaining Agreements and Safety contracts.
  • Prior experience using CMMS or other computer-based maintenance systems.
  • Knowledge or prior experience with Lean methodology, RCFA, KAIZEN, problem solving, and data analysis.

Job Type: Full Time

Salary: USD 100,000.00 - USD 140,000.00

The above-stated pay range is the anticipated starting salary range for this position. The Company may adjust this range in light of prevailing market conditions and other factors such as location. The Company will work directly with the selected candidate(s) on the final starting salary in accordance with all applicable laws.
