An opportunity has arisen for a trained Phlebotomist to join Parkside Medical Centre on a 12 months fixed term basis.

The post holder will work as part of the nursing team providing a venepuncture service for registered patients of the practice.

It is essential that the post holder has excellent timekeeping and communication skills, is flexible and adaptable, and can work well within a team and also independently, while using their own initiative.

Previous experience working on System One is desirable but not essential as training will be given.

The post is a full-time post, Monday – Friday (not including Bank Holidays) with a starting time of 07:30am.

Hours per week: 37.5 - Starting time 07:30am daily

Job Summary:

Working under the direction of the lead nurse and as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, the post holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population. In addition, the Phlebotomist will be expected to support the nursing team on an as-required basis.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample
  • Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols
  • Maintaining accurate patient records on System One
  • The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples
  • Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies
  • Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner
  • Maintaining an effective liaison with the laboratory staff at ULHT
  • Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters

Person Specification – Phlebotomist:

Qualifications:

  • Relevant qualification in venepuncture (Essential)
  • Good standard of general education (Essential)

Experience:

  • Experience of working with the general public (Essential)
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting (Essential)
  • Experience of working in a primary care environment (Desirable)

Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) (Essential)
  • Effective time management (planning and organising) (Essential)
  • Ability to work as a team member and autonomously (Essential)
  • Competent in the use of Office and Outlook (Essential)
  • EMIS/Systmone/Vision user skills (Desirable)

Other Requirements:

  • Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check (Essential)
  • Occupational Health clearance (Essential)
  • Flexibility to work outside of core office hours (Desirable)
