Position Summary:

The Institutional Research Analyst, under the supervision of the Provost or Provost Designee, Educational Effectiveness wellness, will conduct analyses to support University and Academic Affairs planning, evaluation, effectiveness, and reporting. The IRA will extract, analyze, visualize, and describe various institutional data for use internally for strategic decision-making and externally for informational and official reporting to state and federal agencies and other external organizations as assigned. The Institutional Research Analyst will also support the development of relevant data, including visual data displays for institutional decision-making, and work as part of a cross-University team to develop more automated ways of providing needed data to university constituents.

Starting Salary: $80,000 annualized (salaried exempt employee).

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college.
  2. One (1) year of full-time (or part-time equivalent) experience in institutional research, data analysis, and/or survey research.
  3. Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
  4. Demonstrated understanding of data analysis and research data design techniques.
  5. Demonstrated experience using query tools in a variety of environments.
  6. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications, including data manipulation and professional writing.
  7. Demonstrated proficiency in written and verbal communication.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Experience with reporting systems, report writers, and/or enterprise resource systems.
  2. Experience in developing report creation using tools such as Cognos, Power BI, Business Objects, or Tableau.
  3. Experience in the presentation of data analysis to customers.
  4. Knowledge of and/or experience in higher education.
  5. Experience with statistical analysis software.
  6. Some programming experience preferred, e.g., R, VBA, Python.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  1. Technical competence, including experience with SQL, SAS or similar programming language to extract and explore data from primary systems OR experience with PeopleSoft or other enterprise reporting system.
  2. Analytical competence, including experience applying quantitative and qualitative research methods for the purposes of research, analysis, and reporting.
  3. Verbal and written communication skills that demonstrate the ability to present and communicate complex data, methods, technical information, problems, and alternative solutions to a broad range of technical and non-technical audiences.
  4. Demonstrated ability to analyze and organize data to derive meaningful insights, including communicating verbally, in written, numerical, and graphical forms.
  5. Experience with data reporting and/or visualization tools such as Tableau, Microsoft BI, etc.
  6. Strong customer service orientation and ability to interpret and respond to stakeholder and end-user requests and needs.
  7. Ability to work as part of a team and develop productive working relationships with diverse groups of people.
  8. Excellent organizational skills and time management skills.
  9. The position also requires accuracy, attention to detail, proofreading skills, the ability to multitask and adhere to deadlines, and ethical and legal standards in institutional research.
  10. Knowledge of and proficiency in relational database systems and tools is a plus.
  11. General knowledge of the requirements to adhere to Federal, State, and University policies regarding access to, use, and release of confidential information (FERPA).
  12. Sensitivity to cultural diversity and the ability to communicate and interact effectively with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  13. Ability to work effectively in teams.
  14. High level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Apply analytical and problem-solving skills to research and reporting projects.
  2. Apply technical/programming skills to extract, analyze, and explore data from primary systems.
  3. Analyze and organize data to derive meaningful insights.
  4. Summarize and present data and results clearly and accurately in verbal and written communications and numerical and graphical forms.
  5. Conduct needs assessment and perform stakeholder and end-user research.
  6. Propose analytic reports to answer strategic, tactical, structured, or unstructured business questions.
  7. Prepare interpretive analysis and present findings through complete narrative reports as well as tabular and graphic data displays.
  8. Prepare written reports, visual data displays, and other types of presentations to assist in communicating data and analyses to a variety of audiences and stakeholders.
  9. Develop, improve, and assist with the automation of current data gathering and reporting systems in conjunction with functional area experts, data team members, administrators, and others.
  10. Prepare deliverables, such as dashboards, interactive worksheets/workbooks, and/or reports using appropriate tools.
  11. Interpret and respond effectively to stakeholder and end-user requests and needs.
  12. Develop, maintain, and document database queries.
  13. Troubleshoot and manipulate data and fulfill recurring and ad-hoc data requests for internal and external reporting requirements, including for external entity compliance, internal and external program reviews, and environmental scanning.
  14. Design and conduct analytical studies in conjunction with the Associate Provost.
  15. Work across locations and departments (e.g., research analysts or related personnel hired by the schools and/or campus staff) and administrators in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position and assisting researchers in the schools as needed.
  16. Review data for integrity, assist with data warehousing processes, and archive data to meet accreditation requirements.
  17. Develop online surveys using the Alliant online survey tool (Qualtrics) and assist others in using the program for their survey needs.
  18. Perform other related tasks, duties, and responsibilities as required, assigned, or directed.

Contact Responsibility:

Internal: Interacts with supervisor to receive general direction and instructions and/or review work results. This position will work closely with colleagues in multiple departments (e.g., Faculty, Program Directors and Deans, non-academic administrators, etc.) to support students and colleagues in achieving student success and Department goals.

External: Vendors related to the operation of software.
