  • Primary Location: Hybrid on and off site with occasional travel to donor meetings and events. Locations in Beaverton and Hillsboro, Oregon

Job Summary: The Development Director will plan and implement a comprehensive fundraising program to ensure the organization raises the resources it needs to pursue its mission and vision in a values-aligned manner. To further the mission of Family Promise of Greater Washington County, this role must collaborate closely with the Executive Director and the Finance team to lead fundraising efforts across grants, contracts, sponsorships, major donor relationships, special appeals and events, and grassroots fundraising.

Essential Duties:

Fundraising Strategy and Planning

  • Drive and develop FPGWC’s Annual Development Plan, focusing on a diversified and comprehensive fundraising strategy aligned with program and organizational priorities.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan emphasizing major donors ($5,000+), encompassing every stage of the fundraising cycle (identify, cultivate, solicit, steward, recognize, and evaluate) to meet short-term financial goals and establish a strong financial base for the future.
  • Monitor income and expenses related to fundraising activities, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and financial sustainability.
  • Evaluate and report progress toward goals to the Executive Director and the Board of Directors.

Donor Cultivation and Stewardship

  • Identify and cultivate relationships with individual donors, faith-based organizations, corporate sponsors, foundations, government agencies, and other institutional representatives to secure a diverse portfolio of financial support.
  • Manage and grow stewardship of a portfolio of high-net-worth donors and prospects, identifying new prospects with the capacity to contribute $5,000 or more.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to donors, addressing inquiries and acknowledging contributions promptly, and stewarding them through various means including events, one-on-one visits, site visits, appeals, campaigns, etc.
  • Initiate and lead major-donor appreciation events and annual thank-you gifts, maintaining gift recognition policies.
  • Supervise the production of donor correspondence, including gift acknowledgments, thank-you notes, and tax letters, and generate and mail acknowledgment letters weekly to ensure accurate and timely communications.

Event Planning and Community Engagement

  • Work with CES to mobilize volunteers in effective donor engagement and fundraising activities; lead and collaborate with staff on the management and planning of fundraising events and donor receptions, developing sponsorship opportunities for these events.
  • Design, plan, coordinate, and execute fundraising events, community events, client events, and other events to raise awareness of community needs and FPGWC’s services, promote inclusion, celebrate diversity, and connect the community to FPGWC’s mission.
  • Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and community partners to ensure successful event planning, execution, and follow-up.

Grant Management and Compliance

  • Manage grant calendar and research and identify mission-aligned grant opportunities.
  • Prepare compelling grant proposals and manage the grant application process, ensuring prompt submission and compliance with all reporting requirements.
  • Identify new government-sourced grant opportunities and expand the organization’s corporate grant strategy.

Marketing and Communication

  • Produce and draft engaging fundraising materials and publications, including donor letters, client testimonials, newsletters, annual reports, and content for campaigns, in collaboration with the Executive Director and Director of Programs.
  • Foster a culture of ethical storytelling among staff and leadership team to communicate organizational successes and challenges effectively, connecting emotionally with donors.
  • Develop print and digital marketing content related to fundraising.
  • Attend in-person networking events and grantee meetings/conferences.
  • Assist in making phone calls for campaigns.
  • Serve on the Marketing and Communications Committee.

Data Management, Budgeting, and Reporting

  • Establish systems, processes, and tools to maximize fundraising capacity, including oversight of the donor management database and data entry staff.
  • Supervise timely data entry of all gifts into the Bloomerang database (including pledges, checks, cash, online credit card gifts, in-kind gifts, matching gifts, honor/memorial gifts, foundation gifts, government grants) and maintain correct and up-to-date donor records.
  • Lead analysis of donor data to inform fundraising strategy and campaigns, assisting with website updates and content posting.
  • Track and report on fundraising progress and outcomes, evaluating the effectiveness of strategies and recommending adjustments as needed.
  • Provide complete monthly gift reports to the Executive Director, Bookkeeper, and Board of Directors.
  • Collaborate closely with the Executive Director and Finance team to develop and manage the development budget.

Direct Supervision Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision to the Community Engagement Specialist (CES), including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, promoting and monitoring career pathing, assigning, evaluating and managing performance, coaching, training and professional development, disciplining, and terminating.
  • Create training materials as needed.
  • Conduct weekly meetings with direct reports. Follow-up on action items in a timely manner. Ensure that regular employee feedback loops are ongoing, transparent, professional, and mutually beneficial employee/supervisor communications.
  • Develop a successful and supportive work culture that is inclusive, flexible, and understanding.
  • Manage relationships with contractors and vendors, including the Social Media and Website Manager, that pertain to the organization’s development program.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Experience:

  • 3+ years in nonprofit fundraising, with specific knowledge of PNW and Oregon nonprofit sectors.
  • Proven track record of achieving revenue goals over $1M annually and building fundraising infrastructure aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Expertise in individual donor programs, including major gifts, grassroots fundraising, and volunteer fundraiser management.
  • Experience in all aspects of philanthropy, such as fundraising techniques, data analytics, donor research, gift processing, and reporting.
  • Strong skills in grant research, proposal writing, event planning, and securing institutional support, including foundations and other sources.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies from diverse funding sources.
  • Success in closing major gifts, planned giving, and leading multi-faceted development programs.
  • Cultural competency and advocacy skills to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds, especially related to homelessness and poverty.
  • Knowledge of best practices, regulations, and ethical standards in fundraising, with a strong commitment to DEIA.

Communication and Language:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to craft compelling narratives and make persuasive presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Strong people skills are critical to building and nurturing relationships with donors, board members, staff, volunteers, and community partners.

  • Work Setting: FPGWC offices are situated indoors, in a working family shelter environment. Must be able to work with some workplace distractions.
  • Body Positioning: In a typical day, one may sit for extended periods of time at a computer station, answer and speak on phones throughout the day, lift and carry light weight and medium weight supplies and equipment, and help in setting up for events and meeting functions.
  • Work attire is appropriate for the situation and the audience.
