MAJOR GIFTS OFFICER

Office of Advancement

Classification: Class Code 6111 / Level 4 / Exempt / Full-Time / Benefited

Anticipated hiring rate : $100,000 - $120,000 (commensurate with experience)

THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Major Gift Officer (MGO) is a critical member of the Office of Advancement at UC Law San Francisco. The MGO secures philanthropic gifts from alumni and friends of the College to advance its work, which is accomplished through strategic, thoughtful, and timely communications and engagements, as well as extensive relationship building.

The MGO reports to the Chief Advancement Officer and focuses on managing and developing a portfolio of major and principal gift donors. Essential functions include:

  • Actively manage, create, and implement strategy for a portfolio of 125-150 current, lapsed, and prospective major and principal gift donors through identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Develop and strengthen relationships between donors and the law school through one-on-one meetings, events, and strategic engagement initiatives. The MGO’s success will be measured by solicitations made and funds raised in addition to personal visits and meaningful contacts.
  • Partner and collaborate with members of the Advancement team, the Chancellor and Dean, Assistant Chancellor & Dean/Chief of Staff, faculty, and other internal members of the UC Law SF community to remain current on and share key College initiatives and updates with donors, advancing solicitation and stewardship strategies.
  • Participate in events throughout the year including institutional signature events (e.g., Convocation, Swearing-In Ceremony, Chancellor’s Reception), Spring Week, Alumni Chapter and Affinity Group events, and other events presenting opportunities for donor engagement and cultivation.
  • Memorialize and document all communications and interactions with donors by entering timely contact reports into the Raiser’s Edge NXT donor database.
  • Other related responsibilities as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree required, with preference for candidates who have advanced degrees.
  • 3-5 years of progressive and successful development experience in relationship-based major gifts, preferably in higher education.
  • Proven success in securing major gifts and upgrading donors.

  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of major and principal gift donors in order to develop fruitful relationships with the law school.
  • Possess a keen understanding of the fundraising cycle: identifying, qualifying, soliciting, and stewarding major and principal gift donors.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including demonstrated writing and editing skills in the preparation of proposals, and in the drafting of related correspondence, often for the signature of institutional leaders.
  • Stellar relationship building skills and ability to build rapport with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Commitment to appropriate management of sensitive and confidential constituent data.
  • Excellent time management and follow-up skills.
  • Ability to work well under deadlines and to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to establish and achieve quantified goals and objectives.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to travel around the region and to other areas of the country.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
