Job Overview:

Primary Responsibilities are to provide emergency psychiatric evaluations and dispositions to patients in crisis in the Emergency Department of RWJ Hamilton.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • PhD, MA in Mental Health, MSW, or BSW with Screening experience can be considered

Certifications and Licenses Required:

  • N/A

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Per Diem

  • Evening, Weekend, and Holiday position

  • On-site and On-call shifts

Essential Functions:

  • Crisis Professional is expected to arrive to the Emergency Department within 60 minutes of receiving phone call

  • Performs mental health assessment to determine the patient s appropriate level of care in consultation with the on-call psychiatrist

  • Communicates findings with on-call psychiatrist to decide on appropriate disposition of patient within the network, other agencies or home. Follows corporate policy on Face to Face Psychiatric Evaluation

  • Coordinates commitment process through the designated screening center if required

  • Documents assessments on the designated medical record form in accordance with established department documentation standard

  • Initiates admission process to either RWJBH or other appropriate facility

  • If psychiatric admission is required, Crisis Professional will obtain insurance pre-certification if/when accepting facility information is available

  • Arrange transportation for patients requiring transfer between facilities

  • Serves as an advocate for patients by facilitating connections with personal support systems and follow-up mental health services

  • Completes appropriate communication with areas of the continuum

  • Provides appropriate forms and releases

  • Maintains statistical records as appropriate

  • Conducts follow-up phone calls to patients recently discharged in order to ensure connection to follow-up care in the community

  • Participates in QA/QI activities

  • Uses understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient s age-specific treatment and care
