Legacy Community Health is a premium, Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that provides comprehensive care to community members regardless of their ability to pay. Our roots began in 1981 as the Montrose Clinic, with specialization in HIV education, testing, and treatment. Since then, the agency has expanded to over 50 clinics in Houston, one in Baytown, two in Beaumont, and one in Deer Park with extensive services that include adult primary care, HIV/AIDS care, pediatrics, OB/GYN and maternity, dental, vision, and behavioral health. Job Description
Ultrasound technologists use machines that direct sound waves into the human body to create echo-mapped pictures of internal organs. The Ultrasound Tech will assist the provider to determine the gestational age and the expected date of delivery as well as the stage of development.
Essential Functions
- Analyze captured images, identifying variations between healthy and abnormal areas, including findings in the report to be forwarded to the physician.
- Ensure that the images produced by the equipment are clear for diagnosis; make adjustments to the equipment as needed to obtain better images.
- Help patients prepare for procedures by explaining the process, assisting them to the table, and preparing the skin surface by applying gel before using the equipment.
- Perform approximately 10 ultrasounds per day, including at least 50% anatomy scans.
- Communicate effectively with patients to maintain comfort during examinations.
- Possess knowledge of normal human anatomy, normal anatomic variations, and abnormal conditions.
- Promote quality patient care through proper scanning techniques and optimal equipment settings.
- Interact effectively with radiologists by describing clinical histories, demonstrating normal and abnormal anatomy, and modifying scan protocols as directed.
- Display a cooperative attitude and excellent communication skills necessary to explain procedures and elicit patient cooperation.
- Be responsible for the daily maintenance of the ultrasound machine and transducers, reporting malfunctioning equipment to the Practice Manager immediately.
- Maintain cleanliness of the assigned area.
- Respond to associate, physician, and patient questions, providing factual information according to clinic guidelines.
- Participate in quality assurance programs, meeting with the Director of Ultrasound monthly for quality assurance purposes.
- Maintain adequate levels of medical supplies necessary for ultrasound testing.
- Maintain storage of videotapes and sonograms.
- Follow Legacy guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to prevent unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).
- Maintain established Legacy policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Implement job responsibilities consistent with the Legacy Mission and Code of Ethics and supportive of Legacy’s cultural diversity objectives.
- Participate in the Performance Improvement Program.
- Perform other related work as required.

- Operate assigned equipment and perform all procedures safely as instructed.
- Maintain work area and equipment in condition required by LCHS standards.
- Demonstrate proper body mechanics in all functions.
- Check on the patient’s environment and equipment to ensure safety, reporting safety concerns promptly to appropriate personnel.
- Follow LCHS’s exposure control plans for bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
- Demonstrate knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment (Universal Precautions).
- Ensure a safe environment by instituting appropriate control measures.
- Attend annual education programs.
Education & Training Requirements
- Completion of clinical and classroom program in keeping with eligibility requirements of the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
- Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Sonographers.
- Must maintain good standing with certifying body.
- Meet all continuing education requirements to maintain certification by the American Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
Work Experience Requirements
- At least 2 years of obstetric/fetal ultrasound experience required.
- Must be able to work in a team setting.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- This job requires access to confidential and sensitive information, requiring ongoing discretion and secure information management.
- Bilingual English and Spanish speaking preferred.
- Ability to meet Legacy Community Health’s EPIC proficiency requirements.
