We are looking to hire an experienced professional to join our team at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant in Oak Harbor, Ohio, to lead our Nuclear Reactor Engineering team.
Position Summary
This position is with Energy Harbor Nuclear and is responsible for coordinating and supervising the daily activities of the Reactor Engineering team, to include: making decisions guided by policies, procedures, and the business plan; providing supervision of staff in assigned functional area to ensure proper development of solutions to complex system/component problems; providing technical expertise and direction on all aspects of the operation of the reactor core and with regards to nuclear fuel and being responsible for behaviors demonstrating applicable Critical Success Factors.
Responsibilities Include:
  • Accountable for the performance of a team or unit.
  • Actively seek and share own knowledge of industry trends, competitors, etc., that affect the business unit and/or Energy Harbor
  • Analyze complex issues and develop actionable recommendations
  • Assign tasks and manage personnel to ensure due dates and completions standards are met
  • Consistently meet and demonstrate the expectations delineated in Section VIII "Ownership for Engineering Programs" of the Energy Harbor Nuclear Operating Company Engineering Principles and Expectations
  • Continually seek opportunities to increase customer satisfaction and broaden/deepen relationships; anticipate customers' needs and propose alternative solutions when necessary
  • Coordinate and supervise the daily activities of a business support, technical, or production team; make decisions guided by policies, procedures, and business plan
  • Develop and complete investigations and corrective actions in accordance with the Corrective Action Program
  • Develop long and short-range core operating plans for refueling activities, core monitoring, fuel integrity, fuel performance, fuel inspection, new fuel receipt, fuel storage, fuel disposal, physics and surveillance testing, reactivity management, and power maneuvering
  • Develop outage and routine maintenance activity lists
  • Drive continuous improvement across the business unit and Energy Harbor
  • Encourage open, honest, direct, and ongoing conversation amongst team members
  • Ensure activities are completed in accordance with standardized Fleet practices, policies, and procedures
  • Ensure satisfactory performance and qualification of assigned personnel; coordinate training activities for assigned personnel; and develop assigned personnel for increased responsibility and more demanding roles
  • Ensure technical adequacy of all corrective actions to resolutions of system/component problems
  • Ensure technical adequacy of all generated engineering products including calculations, conceptual designs, and Engineering Change Packages
  • Execute the performance management process by providing feedback and coaching on an ongoing basis throughout the year by discussing development opportunities, performance issues, and changes that are occurring, as well as conducting mid-year and year-end performance reviews with employees to achieve established objectives
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve equipment problems
  • Interface with and coordinate activities performed by outside engineering/consulting service companies
  • Interface with other groups to resolve issues as required
  • Lead, educate, and direct others to improve team effectiveness and communicate results/recommendations to varying audiences (including senior leadership)
  • Maintain a high level of safety commitment throughout day-to-day functions
  • Manage the completion of activities to meet specified quality and timeliness requirements, as required to support site operations (both outage and on-line)
  • Participate in Fleet process improvements for the unit and with other organizational element
  • Perform as the site custodian of special nuclear material
  • Perform Emergency Response Organization activities as assigned, including on-call responsibilities
  • Provide corrective action or work management database tracking or issuance of unit work documents
  • Provide input for interface with regulatory and oversight agencies
  • Report to manager on the progress of various projects and advise on any issues that could impair the successful completion of projects
  • Responsible for group-level budget to address technical support and training/qualification requirements. Understand and schedule work according to departmental budget
  • Responsible for work assignment, meeting outage milestones, and routine administrative duties
  • Set priorities for the team to ensure task completion; coordinate work activities with other supervisors and/or managers.
  • Work effectively with different parts of the organization; broaden, deepen, and maintain relationships at all levels.
Requirements include:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or the Physical Sciences required; a focus on Nuclear Engineering and/or Advanced Degree (preferred)
  • Minimum of two years' experience in such areas as reactor physics, core measurements, core heat transfer, and core physics testing programs required
  • Three to five years' experience in nuclear engineering, maintenance, operations, or a related field/function required
  • Must reside within site-specific Emergency Response Organization response time.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Three years of previous supervisory/leadership experience
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to make accurate decisions and demonstrate sound judgment
  • Current or former Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) License/Certification
  • Demonstrated ability to both contribute to and execute an agreed-upon strategy for driving improvement in an organization.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and the ability to lead others in achieving goals for the benefit of the business unit and Energy Harbor
  • Leadership capabilities, positive attitude, and results orientation that can improve design and operating margin and promote continuous improvements in product quality.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the capability to effectively interface with all audiences across the organization
  • Exceptional relationship management, leadership, teamwork, and managerial skills.
  • Familiarity with nuclear power plant design and licensing basis documents and the processes used to maintain them.
  • Highly driven, self-motivated, and enthusiastic leader capable of communicating, motivating, and driving workforces toward positive change and improvement
  • Professional Engineer Registration.
