General Function
The Academic Advisor provides fundamental academic advising to students in understanding degree requirements, course selection, and university policies. This position proactively orients students regarding admissions, placement testing, registration processes, policies, procedures, resources, and programs, monitors academic progress, conducts routine check-ins, and addresses academic concerns. The Advisor collaborates with retention and recruitment professionals and initiatives to identify at risk-students, and then connects them with appropriate resources, as well as contribute to efforts to attract potential students to the department.
Description of Primary Duties
An Academic Advisor I within the McQueary College of Health and Human Services (MCHHS) is a 12-month, full-time, staff who operates as a team member within the MCHHS Student Success and Advisement Center (SSAC). The Academic Advisor I will assist MCHHS undergraduate students with the development of academic plans of study appropriate for their stated educational goals, support the retention efforts of the College by providing personalized student academic mentoring, and connect students to appropriate University resources unique to their needs. The Academic Advisor I assists with the summer Student Orientation, Advisement, and Registration program (SOAR) and participates in College and University recruitment events as needed.
Provide academic advisement to students majoring or minoring in a discipline in the McQueary College of Health and Human Services (MCHHS); work closely with at-risk students to help better connect them to resources on campus, to help them create reasonable and realistic academic plans of study, and help them explore appropriate academic/professional pathways; assist MCHHS transfer students as they make their transition to the University; provide support to the retention efforts of the College; assist with recruitment events on- and off-campus, which may include presenting to large groups and travel; serve as an advisor during the Student Orientation, Advisement, and Registration (SOAR) program over the course of the summer; create and maintain electronic advisee academic files; utilize the advising notes feature to accurately document academic recommendations and discussions; participate in professional development activities to remain competent and informed of the most effective advisement techniques; contribute to an environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds; contribute to the overall success of the MCHHS Student Success and Advisement Center and its initiatives by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
Education : A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree is preferred.
Experience : Academic advising experience is preferred, where knowledge of federal, state, and higher education policies and procedures has been gained. At least one to two years in higher education or similar related work experience is preferred.
Skills : Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills (particularly in working with a diverse student population), organizational and management skills, problem solving skills, organizational skills and attention to detail are required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required. Computer literacy is required, experience with database applications is preferred.
Other : The scope of the position minimally requires work in the evenings and on weekends. The position may require travel, including overnight travel.
