Responsibilities
The Senior Director, Financial Services will extend the reach of Mayo Clinic’s chief financial officer (CFO), by being the face of Finance and driving the execution of its agenda as a delegate of the CFO and ensuring CFO involvement at the right time by acting as a gatekeeper and monitoring information flow. This position is responsible for working with the CFO to prioritize and focus effort on the highest-level priorities and/or delegate work to the appropriate person(s). Builds and maintains excellent relationships with Finance leadership and other C-suite leaders (strategy, public affairs, business development, digital, practice, research, education, etc) to enable effective collaboration and coordination in pursuit of organizational priorities, high service levels, and a reasonable cost to serve. The position will be a primary lead on the execution of Finance’s transformation journey, working with finance leadership and others to ensure it is well planned, well communicated, and well executed. Key elements of this work include the identification of gaps and needs in knowledge skills and abilities as well as necessary elements of culture change; continued surveillance of leading edge practices in healthcare and other industries; identification of suboptimal approaches, processes, and policies in Mayo Clinic’s finance structure; creation and execution of a workforce strategy that includes diverse sourcing, workforce development, and succession planning; and the development of a next generation approach to patient financial interactions (“easier than Starbucks”). The position will take an active role in all these dimensions of the overall plan and will be the primary lead on many of them. The position will develop strategies execute operational best practices and provide leadership for the business operations function. Drives excellence in financial management, communication (verbal, written and presentations), business and strategic planning, performance monitoring and reporting. Effectively partners with the Chief Financial Officer to plan and create meeting agendas, activities and communications. Leads the development, communication and implementation of effective strategies and processes that support the operations of the department. Ability to set and measure standards for performance in all areas of the department, periodically reviewing reports on programs. Works closely with Human Resources to onboard new talent, facilitate the departmental FTE review and approval, annual budget preparation, including data for analyzing, planning and allocation of resources, and change management. Supports department, division and institutional projects, staff recruitment, policy implementation, and serves as a primary resource for issues and communications within the operations function. Develops advances and executes projects/programs that leverage the lean agile methodology to enable Finance to deliver incremental value and meet strategic objectives.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree and 10 years of experience with a focus on strategy and operations is required. Must have a broad-based knowledge of office support and computer systems along with spreadsheets, databases, statistics, software knowledge and installation, and accounting practices for budgetary responsibilities. Must possess strong leadership, business, analytical, oral and written communication, presentation skills, and superior interpersonal skills to facilitate effective relationships both within and outside of Mayo Clinic; solid organizational and project management skills; strategic judgment; track record in building positive, cross-functional relationships. Must possess political savvy and the ability to function effectively in a complex and often ambiguous environment, with consensus-style operation that expects and promotes teamwork. Must have experience managing and leading teams. Must be able to take business services from strategic consultation through tactical execution in a team setting and be able to develop key performance indicators/metrics to ensure success. Experience developing and executing business plans is important. This position requires someone who is a self-starter with ability to manage multiple priorities and with attention to detail. Will evaluate and improve upon existing processes and develop/implement new processes where appropriate. Meets deadlines with enthusiasm and confidence. Proactively identifies and mitigates risk with meticulous project planning and creative solutions. Must be able to garner trust and influence. Experience in driving change by influencing senior executives, making recommendations to drive growth or improve ROI, and/or leading implementation of process-based initiatives. High degree of competency in data, analytics, financial analysis and/or directly comparable quantitative skillset. Is a creative problem-solver and adapt at storytelling when reporting outcomes. Ability to work independently. Has a desire to learn and champion agile methodologies, including use of appropriate technologies and leading behavior change by example to create empowered, client-centered teams and solutions.
