POSITION DESCRIPTION


POSITION TITLE: Financial Analyst


LOCATION/DEPT: DHQ- Finance Department


REPORTS TO (TITLE): Chief Financial Officer and Divisional Director of Finance


FLSA CATEGORY: Exempt

OUTCOMES


Responsible for providing management reporting and analysis to All NCI Financial Departments, reconciliation, and financial service responsibilities identified below. Departments and Programs will receive this financial analysis support that assists them in managing their operations and ensuring compliance with established policies and procedures of the Salvation Army, generally accepted accounting principles, and contract requirements.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Financial Analysis/Management Support


  • Provide financial analysis, consultation and support to Department, Corps, or Program Directors as follows:
    • Complete regular analyses of actual versus budget income and expenses variances to assist Department and Program Directors in their decision-making process and the timely identification of unfavorable revenue or expense trends.
    • Analyze balance sheet accounts as necessary or required.
    • Assist in the preparation of financial summary reports for Officer's presentation to Advisory Boards, including attending meetings to explain financial results as requested.
    • Assist, when needed, in budget preparation.
    • Assist with month-end and year-end closing procedures as required.
    • Assist Department staff with adjusting entries, accruals, and reclassifications as necessary.
  • Become the SME (Subject Matter Expert) for the NCI Division on Accumatica Financial Reporting including standardized management reporting development and deployment.
  • Conduct quarterly finance review meetings with Department, Corps, and Program Directors, discussing financial operating trends and providing operationally related financial forecasts and/or cost-benefits analyses that will assist with sound fiscal management.
  • Preparation and distribution of monthly financial dashboards and monthly financial statements to Department, Corps, and Program directors.
  • Assist with training staff on systems and procedures within NCI Division.

Internal Audit


  • Assist with the annual THQ internal audit by gathering or preparing requested information or responses, reconciliations, or workpapers, all supported by appropriate documentation.
  • Assist with internal audits of local units throughout the NCI Division as follows:
    • Audit records to determine compliance with established accounting and bookkeeping policies/procedures and to determine the viability of ongoing fiscal stability.
    • Prepare reports and provide recommendations to improve financial controls, practices, and procedures.
    • Propose recommendations for corrective actions in those cases where deficiencies exist, including identification and communication of opportunities for the strengthening of internal controls and improvement of operating efficiencies.
    • Provide training to Officers and staff in developing methods and procedures that will result in improvements in financial recordkeeping and reporting.

Reconciliation Financial Services


  • Perform all required responsibilities for the following:
    • Assist with the preparation of the annual THQ Consolidation reports as directed by the Divisional Director of Finance.
    • Assist with any 1099 IRS or other governmental reviews as needed.
    • Compile daily workflows and operating procedures for the Finance Department into a resource manual and ensure that the manual is reviewed and updated as necessary on an annual basis.
    • Provide back-up for other operational areas in the Finance Department.
    • Other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS


This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and Divisional Director of Finance. In contacts related to this position's duties, this individual acts as a representative of The Salvation Army and its mission.


PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS


This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved as well as the timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals. An evaluation of how effectively staff and professional contacts respond to the services being provided will also be done.


EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE


  • A Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Minimum of 6 years' experience in accounting and financial analysis, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products: Excel, Word, Outlook, and other PC-based accounting and financial reporting applications.

POSITION LIMITATIONS


  • This individual will only commit resources that have been allocated or approved.
  • This individual will keep the Executive Director of Finance informed on all critical issues relating to his/her area of responsibility.
  • This individual will adhere to all Army policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT


  • This position is required to do light to moderate physical work.
  • In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use standard office equipment and a PC.
  • The work environment includes an office environment with a low noise level.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
