Purpose of Position:
Grounded in best practices of academic advising and student success, the Academic Advisor will be a primary resource for students with the intent to guide and aide in the understanding of institutional policies and procedures, and provide knowledge and advice on degree requirements, co-curricular opportunities, and additional academic support resources. The service of Academic Advising will be a collaborative educational process in which a working relationship is established to support students' educational goals and encourages the utilization of campus resources to optimize the students' experience.
Job Duties:
Academic Advising (80%)
Essential duties as needed for academic advising include but not limited to:
  • Establish a strong working relationship with students.
  • Maintain a caseload of students as determined by the Director of Academic Advising
  • Manage and provide availability in student appointment scheduling system
  • Maintain regular outreach to students about course planning, registration timelines, and related dates.
  • Develop and maintain a personal advising philosophy
  • Analyze transcripts for the purpose of appropriate course recommendations
  • Utilize technology resources including Navigate, Self-Services Banner (SSB), and Degree Works for the purpose of teaching students to select appropriate courses and progress towards degree completion
  • Guide students in planning academic careers, internship and career opportunities, clinical placements, volunteer experiences, and course registration
  • Provide appropriate follow-up documentation in designated student information systems
  • Assist students with initiating appropriate forms and petitions as necessary
  • Maintain the confidentiality of student records and other information according to FERPA regulations.
  • Maintain knowledge of University and SDBOR policies and procedures
  • Share knowledge of the University Catalog and semester schedules with students
  • Apply academic coaching and success strategies for students who have been identified as needing additional supports; implements and monitors academic progress and academic recovery programs
  • Monitor Early Alert notifications for caseload, providing outreach, resource knowledge, and referrals to students in need of additional personal or academic support
  • Perform daily tasks using Student Information Systems such as, but not limited to: Banner, Image Now, Navigate
  • Assist departments with course curriculum, scheduling, and updating the University Catalog
  • Create plans of study for assigned programs
  • Provide academic advising for all new student onboarding events
  • Engage in professional development activities, and meet continuing education requirements as determined by the Director of Academic Advising

Department of Nursing Duties (10%)
Essential duties as needed for the Department of Nursing accreditation and operations, and deemed appropriate for Academic Advisors to participate or assist with may include, but not limited to:
  • Provide information on NCLEX-RN exam preparation and licensure application processes.
  • Assist with recruitment activities such as campus visits, Northern Bound Days, and other NSU Admissions events
  • Participate in nursing program orientations, information sessions, and other student events.
  • Provide referrals to practicing nurses, nurse educators, and other healthcare professionals to help students explore various career paths and specializations within the nursing field.
  • Maintain current knowledge of graduate school trends, program offerings, and admission requirements in the nursing field.
  • Attend departmental meetings and contribute to discussions on curriculum and policy changes.

Other Duties as Assigned (10%)
Additional duties as assigned by Director of Academic Advising, and deemed appropriate for Academic Advisors to participate or assist with may include, but not limited to:
  • Assist with Commencement Day logistics, tasks, or responsibilities
  • Attend recruitment activities such as campus visits, Northern Bound Days, and other NSU Admissions events
  • Serve as a member on various campus committees
  • Attend annual trainings regarding FERPA, Student Affairs, and Human Resources
Formal Education and Training:
  • Masters' degree in counseling, academic advising, education, or related field preferred. Bachelor's degree required.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Experience in teaching, academic advising, counseling, and/or mentoring
  • Proven ability to work with and understand the diverse needs of students
  • Experience working with students from a variety of backgrounds
  • Proven ability to work effectively with other people, collaborate with other departments, and advocate for disadvantaged students

Academic Advising is a service within the Student Success Center, which is part of the Academic Affairs division of Northern State University. This is a full-time, 12-month, benefited position.
