NSF's NOIRLab is seeking an Electronics Technician to be part of the Electrical/Electronics Engineering (EE) group of NOIRLab Engineering Services, an inter-continentally distributed team of about 40 electrical and electronics engineers and technicians in charge of providing excellence in the design, construction, commissioning and maintenance of all electrical and physical plant equipment at the telescopes and including observatories' instrumentation, and the operation of machine shops. This is a unique opportunity to work in an international, collaborative environment and to participate in a wide variety of projects. This position is located at the Gemini North telescope on Maunakea, Hawai'i.
Essential Functions:

  • Maintain and repair telescope systems
  • Assemble and troubleshoot electronic components such as wiring, cables, pc boards and connectors
  • Disassemble / assemble non-electronic equipment
  • Perform daily checks of telescope systems for night operations
  • Support laser maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Identify and order proper components for telescope and instrument systems
  • Maintain labs at summit and the Hilo base facility
  • Maintain test equipment, keep test equipment certifications current
  • Create/modify documentation of telescope and instrument systems
  • Inventory test equipment and 2-way radios
  • Part of team providing support for summit operations as required including physical labor, snow clearing and housekeeping
  • Complies with applicable safety standards and ensure safety of operations in areas under purview; correct and/or report unsafe conditions and practices.
  • Demonstrates for all audiences a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • All AURA employees are responsible for the proper management and control of all AURA property within their work area, whether assigned to them or someone else. This responsibility includes reporting any known missing, stolen, or non-working property in their work area to their supervisor or the AURA Property Officer.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with government award terms and conditions assigned to this position or subordinates of this position as defined in the Vela Award Management system
Other Functions:
  • Assist Engineers and technicians with tasks as needed
  • Create Safety documentation such as Job Hazard Analysis, LOTO and work procedures as necessary
  • Assist in creating / revising Preventive Maintenance Procedures
  • Cross train individuals when necessary
  • Perform facility safety walk through inspections
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities:
  • A.S Degree in Electronics Technology
  • Ability to repair electronic devices, circuit boards and small connectors.
  • Ability to multitask and execute work as directed by the supervisor.
  • Must possess knowledge of Windows and PC based computer programs and understand Electronics and electrical circuits.
  • Able to utilize electronic test equipment
  • Able to safely operate manlifts, overhead cranes and forklifts
  • Able to work on projects or assignments with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to work effectively in an interdisciplinary and diverse international environment as a committed team member team environment and be able to share and discuss ideas and opinions openly.
  • Must possess practical knowledge of mechanical skills and be able to use basic hand tools and precision measuring devices correctly.
  • Must be a good problem solver.
  • Must demonstrate dexterity, safety, and attention to detail.
  • Full English verbal, reading and writing fluency
  • Must be able to work effectively at heights and at high altitude.
  • Must possess a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license and a clean driving record and be able to drive a 4-WD vehicle.
Preferred Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electronics Technology or equivalent
  • College level courses in optics and laser technology
  • Professional experience working as an electronics technician, especially experience working for an astronomy organization

  • Must possess - 1) ability to read and understand instructions, drawings, safety guides, and other written materials necessary to perform job; 2) sufficient visual capacity to perform the applicable functions without assistance of visual aids other than eye contacts or eye glasses; 3) sufficient spoken aural capacity to hear and understand instructions, warning bells, fire alarms, or shouted instructions without assistance of auditory aids other than a hearing aid; and 4) ability to impart information orally so that others understand and can respond appropriately.
  • Must possess sufficient mobility, strength or dexterity in both arms and hands and both legs to a) grasp, push, pull, turn or otherwise manipulate tools and mechanisms; b) push, shove, pull or otherwise safely and efficiently manipulate tools or mechanisms; c) lift, hold, maneuver, objects of 50 lbs or more; d) maintain balance while performing work; e) remove parts, systems, tools of 50 lbs or more.
  • Some travel may be necessary in or outside the contiguous United States.
  • Maunakea: Must be able to sit for long periods of time; be able to drive a 4-WD vehicle and possess a clean driving record; ability to work at 14,000' in a cold environment for 10 hour shifts. Longer shifts and working during inclement weather occasionally required. Required to pass High Altitude medical examination (post offer and at specified intervals while employed).

Salary Range: $53,100 - $67,320 if annualized. The final pay rate will depend on skills, qualifications, and experience.
