JOB SUMMARY: The Director of Philanthropy will partner closely with the CEO, Chief Financial Officer, and Board of Directors to raise funds for BMAC through individual donations, events, sponsorships, and grants. This role will oversee the Communications & Outreach Manager to ensure consistency of messaging in reaching diverse audiences and engaging community partners. They will coordinate volunteer engagement and appreciation activities across the organization and develop and implement strategies to involve the community and mission partners in BMAC’s work.
OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes, but is not limited to:
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute strategic plans aligned with BMAC’s mission to implement annual fundraising and communications goals.
- Provide visionary leadership in partnership with the CEO, board and management team, about BMAC’s long-term goals to build thriving communities.
- Work collaboratively using strategic thinking and problem-solving skills across departments and teams.
Fundraising Leadership
- Oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of fundraising goals and strategies to diversify revenue streams and increase donor engagement and retention.
- Cultivate and develop excellent donor relations across sectors.
- Seek out and secure funding opportunities through grants, donations, and partnerships to sustain and expand programmatic efforts or special campaigns.
- Oversee special fundraising events.
Strategic Communications
- Oversee work of the Communications & Outreach Manager to ensure consistency of brand and messaging across BMAC programs and communications platforms, including but not limited to the website, social media, or printed materials.
- Develop and implement communications and marketing strategies to advance strategic fundraising and volunteer goals.
Volunteer and Community Engagement
- Launch a new program to coordinate the recruitment, training, and retention of volunteers and promote community thriving through volunteering.
- Represent BMAC and promote programs and services at community events
Supervision and Development
- Recruit, train, supervise, and mentor a diverse team of professionals and volunteers.
- Foster a strength-based, supportive, and innovative culture among staff and volunteers.
- Provide regular performance feedback, conduct performance evaluations, and support staff development through training and professional growth opportunities.
Data Management and Reporting
- Establish and maintain systems for data collection, analysis, and reporting to track program outcomes, measure impact, and ensure compliance with grant and contractual obligations.
- Prepare and present comprehensive reports on program effectiveness, achievements, and challenges to stakeholders and funders.
BMAC Management Team responsibilities
- Serve as a member of the CEO’s Management Team providing advice and counsel to the CEO and other department directors about overall BMAC operations.
- Contribute to efforts to maintain high morale at BMAC across departments.
- Serve as an ambassador for BMAC and representative of the management team with BMAC colleagues and external partners.
- Present to the BMAC board, staff, or others when requested.
Other responsibilities
Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience
Relevant experience and/or education may be substituted for either education or work history.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher, or equivalent experience in nonprofit fundraising, communications, marketing, or other related field.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant work experience; including at least two (2) years in a supervisory role.
- Demonstrated experience raising over $1 million preferred.
- Experience with supervising staff and recruiting and managing volunteers.
- Knowledge of community needs, resources, and relationships in our service area of Walla Walla, Columbia, and Garfield counties is strongly preferred.
- English-Spanish bilingual, bicultural desirable.

- Ability to build strong and authentic relationships with peers, donors, funders, volunteers, and community members.
- Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
- Exceptional independent writing and editing expertise and the ability to craft effective communications to specific audiences.
- Ability to write and obtain grants from federal, state, and private sources.
- Ability to direct effective communications or marketing campaigns to diverse audiences using a wide range of channels including social media, websites, direct mail, and earned and free media.
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues to advance and achieve strategic goals.
- Knowledge of fundraising strategies and curiosity to stay current with new trends in philanthropy.
- Ability to develop and execute fundraising plans and use data to drive decisions.
- Ability to manage complex projects and events on time and within given budgets.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with BMAC staff, volunteers, Board members, and community partners.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Demonstrates the necessary attitudes, knowledge, and skills to work effectively with diverse populations, including LGBTQ and people of color, as well as individuals of all ages and ability levels.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, open office environment, managing multiple projects, with frequent interruptions.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, and SharePoint and also with fundraising software applications, preferably Bloomerang
- Ability to learn/use Constant Contact, Adobe, Canva, Bloomerang, and Volgistics.
Certifications
- Employee must provide their own vehicle for travel and current auto insurance.
- Valid state driver’s license by time of hire with a good driving record. Mileage will be reimbursed according to the current IRS mileage rate.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is generally performed in an office environment. Requires local and some regional travel. Scheduling flexibility is required to accommodate evenings, weekends and unanticipated needs, on occasion. High degree of activity (errands, set-up, etc.) required around events.

Work is primarily performed in an office setting. This position may be involved in setting up booths, tables, visual aids, etc., for meetings and events.
- Mixture of sedentary periods at desk/working on a computer and light physical work, with times of more strenuous work.
- Must be able to move 40 pounds occasionally, and up to 15 pounds frequently.
