THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN THE NEW RIVER VALLEY SERVICE AREA.


Plans, develops, presents and evaluates community health education programs and activities held in the communities served by Carilion Clinic.
Provides health education directly to the community at large, primarily through planned programs, fairs and screening events. Functions as a team member to advance Carilion's Clinic's goals through health education skills and by serving as a resource on community health education issues. Works with minimal direction and uses discretion when communicating screening results.

  • Plans, develops and coordinates activities to educate members of the community on health and safety issues. Activities include health screenings, health fairs, presentations, SafeKids Coalition initiatives, and attendance at events sponsored by Carilion Clinic or other community service organizations.
  • Presents educational programs on a wide variety of community education topics as requested, to include Women and Heart Disease, Early Response, Breast Health, Smoking Cessation, Child Safety, Stress, Nutrition and Physical Activity. Utilizes approved community education teaching aids to assist in the presentation of material dependent on the age and knowledge base of the audience.
  • Evaluates educational programs and activities including reporting community contacts made during events. Provides community benefit information and encourages others within Carilion Clinic to collect and report relevant data.
  • Collaborates with other Carilion Clinic departments, hospitals and community service organizations to align initiatives that improve the health of our community with current Clinic goals. Examples include coordinating community presentations by our physicians, assisting Occupational Medicine with employer requests, and serving on community agency task forces/boards/councils as requested.
  • Enhances professional development through participation in continuing educational programs, conferences and by reading current professional literature. Stays current on screening and healthy lifestyle recommendations.
  • Represents Carilion Clinic through positive interaction with the community and media to increase awareness of health issues and the programs Carilion Clinic offers to the general public.
What We Require:


Education: Bachelors Degree in community health education, public health education, or health and physical education; Masters Degree preferred.
Experience: Three years of professional experience required. Prefer demonstration of public health education background and skills.
Licensure/certification: AHA BLS-HCP required. Eligible to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam within the first year of employment preferred. Virginia Driver's License.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Ability to educate clients of any age or SES level on community health education. Well-organized, proficient at multi-tasking and working with minimal direction. Must possess excellent organizational skills and proficiency in written and verbal communication. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications highly desirable. Job often requires working outside Carilion Clinic facilities and travel to sites within the Clinic's service area. Must provide own transportation.
