Join Gonzaga University as a Security Communications Dispatch Officer
Gonzaga University is seeking a dedicated and skilled Security Communications Dispatch Officer to join our Campus Security & Public Safety team. This critical position provides dispatch, investigative, and communications support to ensure the safety and security of our entire campus community-24 hours a day. As a Communications Officer, you will be the first point of contact for individuals seeking assistance, providing excellent customer service while responding to emergencies, monitoring alarms, and using various security technologies to enhance campus safety.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Dispatch & Communications: Receive and respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, providing clear, concise, and timely communication with campus security personnel, first responders, and other stakeholders.
  • Alarm Monitoring: Monitor fire, burglary, temperature, and panic alarms, ensuring quick and effective responses to incidents or alerts.
  • Security Technology Operations: Utilize video surveillance systems, Persona Card Access systems, and other security technology to maintain officer safety and monitor campus facilities.
  • Incident Management: Log, track, and provide accurate documentation of all security incidents, responses, and actions taken.
  • Customer Service: Serve as the first point of contact for students, faculty, staff, and visitors, offering assistance and information while maintaining a high level of professionalism and service.
  • Safety & Security Support: Assist in maintaining a safe and secure environment for learning, working, and living, in line with the University's mission.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other departments and agencies to coordinate resources and responses to campus-wide events, emergencies, and routine security operations.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position is $41,602 annually.
The internal full salary range is $33,892 - $45,854.

Function Details
Communications:
  • Perform necessary skilled communication while receiving emergency and non-emergency phone calls by collecting vital information from callers to determine best course of action through dispatching officers, transferring to appropriate department or person, or guiding to the correct internal and external resources.
  • Use of appropriate radio protocol, prioritizing calls, and multi-tasking while dispatching officers to calls for service.
  • Responsible for dispatching Plant Services employees to calls for service after regular University work hours.
  • Upon request, take over the Switchboard phone lines when Guest Services is unable to perform this operation (Holidays, School Closures, Meetings).
  • Assess urgency of custodial, maintenance, IT and grounds issues occurring at on and off campus owned properties and advise proper personnel on nights, weekends, and holidays through telephone, radio or by work order depending on the urgency of the problem.
  • Responsible for after-hours notifications to On-Call Security Administrator, Housing and Residence Life, Study Abroad, Student Development, and Administration regarding emergency, medical or unusual circumstances.
  • Upon request of the Spokane Fire Department and the Spokane Police Department, patch officers through to their respective radio channels for direct communication through the dispatch console.
Systems:
Alarms -
  • Monitors fire, burglar, high temperature lab, panic, intrusion, blue light phone, and high water alarms Monitors Persona card access and lock system for breaches in security.
  • Lock and unlock campus buildings through Persona card access system when necessary including emergency lock-down of the University. Monitors Fire Pager and 911 calls Systems.
Security Cameras -
  • Conducts surveillance investigations during real-time and recently occurred incidents while operating the camera system housing more than 600 cameras.
  • When time allows, monitor cameras for illegal, suspicious, and inappropriate behavior and notify officers of observations made.
  • Exports video footage upon request of officers, Spokane Police, or other emergency personnel Systems
Omnigo -
  • Responsible for documenting dispatch calls, daily log activity, and running reports on both the Dispatch Module and the Officer Module.
T2 & Pixit -
  • Utilize the Parking & Transportation software, T2, to locate and identify students, staff, faculty, visitors and vendors.
  • Document lost & Found information into Pixit when items arrive or when items are reunited with their owner.

  • Maintain current list of staff, faculty and students for emergency and non-emergency contacts. Maintain and provide access to student health information for emergency situations.
  • Utilize EMS, StarRez, and other internal systems as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associates, Vocational, or Technical degree or equivalent work experience in field of security, law enforcement, emergency management, military, fire, medical, or similar services.
  • Multi-task in several software and communications programs and devices.
  • Able to clearly communicate and maintain calm demeanor while responding to highly stressful situations including distressed callers.
  • Strong communication skills-both verbal and written-with the ability to stay calm and professional in high-pressure situations.

Desired Qualifications
  • Work experience in higher education.
  • Previous experience in dispatch, security, or emergency services is preferred.
