We are seeking a driven and experienced Corporate Controller who can manage HI-Bio’s accounting organization and scale as HI-Bio grows. The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all accounting activities, including but not limited to payroll operations, general ledger transactions, AP, procurement, financial statement preparation, audit preparation, and implementation of a scale-appropriate ERP system. The Controller will lead the financial reporting process and ensure the accuracy and reliability of all financial information. The Controller ensures that financial policies are established and enforced; records are kept in a timely manner and in accordance with GAAP; adequate controls are in place to safeguard the organization’s assets and processes are established and enforced to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Prior experience with emerging public companies, and the ability to design, implement, and prepare the finance organization for IPO and SEC reporting requirements preferred. Prior biotech/pharma experience is required.
The Controller will be expected to lead the accounting organization and be a hands-on leader with the ability to execute. The Controller will play a key role in building out the accounting team and capabilities.
The projected base salary range for this position is $240,000 - $280,000 (annually).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead HI-Bio’s accounting organization and associated activities. Ensure accurate and timely financial statement reporting and GAAP compliance.
- Lead and assist with the direction, ongoing development, and implementation of policies, processes, and controls to build the infrastructure necessary to support a high-growth organization.
- Manage and support month-end close and reconciliations process and timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Lead management of payroll, accounts payable, and purchasing processes. Assess system requirements for the accounting department in support of organizational growth; systems implementation experience or improvement experience; lead system implementations in core areas of responsibility such as an ERP system (e.g. NetSuite or other systems).
- Partner with finance & accounting leaders to hire, train, and manage additional accounting personnel to scale with HI-Bio’s needs.
- Coordinate with external auditors for annual audits and ad hoc reviews.
- Manage stock-based compensation and equity accounting processes.
- Work with outsourced partners to maintain company’s insurance coverage, valuations and tax-related compliance and activities.
- Lead implementation of internal controls and other processes as needed as the company scales.
- Partner with other parts of the business on ad hoc special projects and analysis.
- Work with VP Finance to monitor and manage cash and investments as necessary.
- Ability to design, document, and maintain effective internal controls over the accounting and financial reporting processes.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, or other related areas.
- CPA certification required. Public company accounting experience preferred.
- Experience in a biotech/pharma required; experience in a comparable capacity in a public biotech/pharma preferred.
- 10+ years of relevant work experience, with 5+ years in the biotech/life science industry.
- Experience leading the implementation of an ERP system (e.g. NetSuite or other systems) with appropriate and scalable chart of accounts preferred.
- Experience with public company/SEC financial reporting experience required.
- Strong understanding of clinical trial accounting.
- Strong technical accounting background and strong writing skills for accounting memos.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and experience with SEC regulation.
- Experience working with external auditors and tax preparers preferred.
- Ability to lead a team, but also be a “hands-on” individual contributor where needed. Strong collaborator with other functions.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced high-growth company, and flexibility to adapt as needed.
- Organized, strong attention to detail and ability to see and plan ahead the needs, opportunities and risks for the finance organization.
- Strong analytical skills, clear communication and presentation skills required.
