Job Summary

Experienced senior level attorneys engage in legal work involving trials, claims, taxation, condemnation, or other types of legal work using well established legal procedures and precedents to perform a variety of professional legal functions. This position works independently to perform legal work requiring specialization in trial, claims, taxation, condemnation, or other types of legal work. Work is reviewed by higher level attorneys.

Job Description

Overview

The Assistant City Attorney III is the journey and experienced level attorney position that performs legal work involving trials, claims, taxation, condemnation, or other types of legal work using well established legal procedures and precedents. Work is reviewed by higher level attorneys.

Essential Functions

  1. Prepares and presents cases in municipal court involving violations such as traffic, zoning, and comparable code violations; handles all litigation activities and communicates with parties involved; interviews police officers, inspectors, city employees, or other witnesses in cases involving the City of Dallas.
  2. Assists and supports attorneys of higher rank in preparing cases for trial; performs trial work involving civil or criminal cases; searches for, interprets, and applies laws, court decisions, and other legal authorities on points of law in the preparation of opinions.
  3. Prepares briefs and arguments on appeals to higher courts and evaluates appeal cases to make recommendations whether or not the city should appeal; prepares and initiates condemnation actions for major projects; drafts and negotiates agreements between property owners.
  4. Prepares legal opinions, memoranda and data for the guidance of the departments in the city and represents departments in court proceedings; reviews and responds to open record requests as needed.
  5. Attends meetings with departmental officials and employees to advise on legal questions and impact of city decisions, policies, proposed actions, and procedures which should be followed; assists and provides legal counsel in managing the City's liability and other risk factors.
  6. Studies state, federal and general municipal law for information and precedents bearing on city legal issues and works with superiors to resolve issues involving the City of Dallas; assists in real estate related research, ownership negotiations, and lien processing.
  7. Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Knowledge of the principles of civil and criminal law, city ordinances, state laws, established precedents and sources of legal reference.
  2. Knowledge of court procedures and rules of evidence.
  3. Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, practices and reference utilized in legal research.
  4. Ability to analyze, appraise, and organize facts, evidence and precedents relevant in assigned cases.
  5. Knowledge of correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  6. Communicating effectively orally and in writing.
  7. Knowledge of customer service and related skills.
  8. Ability to use office machines and computer software.
  9. Ability to perform under pressure.
  10. Ability to prepare routine correspondence and communication.
  11. Establishing and maintaining strong and effective relationships.

Experience

4 Years in General civil law, specialized municipal law or comparable legal experience are required.

Texas Bar License

Education

Juris Doctorate Degree "Law Degree"

Salary Range

$85,183.59 - $106,479.49
