Logistics Counsel


Responsibilities:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate the full range of legal documents relating to various claims as well as logistics services-related agreements, including warehouse management agreements and transportation agreements for multiple modes of transportation
  • Internal communication with relevant stakeholders and external communication with insurance brokers, carriers, third-party administrators, legal counsel, etc.
  • Analyze collected data to determine claim validity and coverage and/or liability
  • Provide legal advice to internal clients for the resolution of claims and complaints
  • Identify legislative and regulatory changes and recommend appropriate action
  • Act as the internal subject matter expert to provide interpretation and explanation of contracts, applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures related to claims
  • Represent SL Legal in internal and external meetings, and communicate accordingly with third-party bodies such as customers, vendors, partners, outside counsel, auditors, insurance brokers/carriers, and the like
  • Develop and distribute key reports and analyses, including claim reports and ad hoc reports for management
  • Promote legal compliance and best practices across the business
  • Deliver training and training materials to the business on key legal areas
  • Work within company guidelines to review, analyze, and negotiate contractual agreements with customers, shippers, consignees, or carriers
  • Escalate and coordinate with External Claims Adjusters (e.g., cargo/freight forwarders insurance carriers, etc.) in order to resolve claims issues
  • Assist in developing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for logistics processes and claims
  • Develop, prepare, and implement claims litigation strategy, including affecting settlements and insurance coverage limits
  • Work toward the resolution of claims files and attend arbitrations, mediations, or trials as necessary
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Active member of Texas bar license in good standing
  • At least 6 years’ relevant legal working experience, particularly in trucks/trailers, cargo/freight damages, property damages, maritime claims, disputes, and insurance
  • Able to produce reports to support findings and analyses
  • Extremely organized and detail-oriented
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate information in a clear and understandable manner
  • Positive attitude and high energy to work in a fast-paced environment, maintain a sense of urgency, and perform with a clear head under pressure
  • Self-motivated individual, assertive attitude, excel in a team-based environment yet able to work independently
  • Be able to multitask and collaborate across different time zones
  • Strong customer service, people skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and web-based applications, claims platform
  • Travel %: up to 10% throughout the U.S.
  • Work Location : Hybrid (WFH + Onsite: TX office Min. 3 days)
