The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key member of the senior leadership team, responsible for overseeing all financial operations of the Hartford Public Schools. The CFO will ensure fiscal stability, promote financial transparency, and drive strategic financial planning to support the district's educational mission and $450 million plus budget. Additionally, the CFO will perform supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Hartford Public Schools’ policies and applicable laws.

The Chief Financial Officer will have a laser focus on accelerating equity and organizational excellence by achieving the overarching priorities of the Hartford Public Schools’ multi-year strategic plan and annual operating plan.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, education, or related field; advanced degree (JD, MBA, MPA, or CPA) preferred
  2. Extensive (over 10 years) relevant work experience and knowledge of business, finance, schools/district management, personnel management, information technology, ancillary services, and operations
  3. At least five (5) years of senior level experience working directly with superintendents, executive cabinet leaders, school board members, nonprofits, or community representatives preferred
  4. Evidence of successful experience leading major change management efforts, preferably in public schools/education or a similar organization
  5. Evidence of successful experience developing and implementing efficient systems and processes
  6. Demonstrated ability to oversee large and complex budgets
  7. Experience with state and/or federal grants management
  8. Familiarity with MUNIS accounting software is a definite advantage
  9. Evidence of successful experience in an urban school district, nonprofit organization, or public institution
  10. Experience with bargaining unit contract administration and negotiation preferred
  11. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and strong judgment
  12. Professional demeanor, customer service orientation, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  13. Strong, effective oral and written communications skills, as well as interpersonal skills
  14. Organizational skills, including follow-up and meticulous attention to detail
  15. Self-starter with the ability to work independently
  16. Service orientation towards supporting schools, the Superintendent, and the City of Hartford
  17. Operate with proficiency a computer and assigned software programs, including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite; ability to learn to use new software related to job responsibilities

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Connecticut certification in School Business Administrator (085) or the ability to acquire such certification is strongly preferred; though, Connecticut Intermediate Administration or Supervision Certification (092) may be considered.
