Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Dental Assistant for the Adult Medical Services department within University Correctional Health Care (UCHC). The Dental Assistant will assist the Dentist during the examination and treatment of patients. Performs certain inter-oral tasks in response to specific instructions from and under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist. Interrelates and works effectively with inmates, other members of the dental staff, medical and nursing staff, correctional staff at all levels, administrative and support staff.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Prepares operatory with appropriate instruments and material for the patients scheduled to be seen.
- Provides chair-side assistance during treatment recognizing the dentist's need for instruments, material, retraction or suction.
- Mixes and fabricates restorative materials.
- Sterilizes instruments and disinfects operatory between patients.
- Develops and mounts routine radiographs.
- Assists in exposing intro-oral and extra-oral radiographs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Graduate from an accredited Dental Assisting Program.
- Certification as a Dental Assistant in the State of New Jersey.
- Valid Dental Radiology Technology License issued by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection.
- Must be certified in CPR.
- Valid driver's license is required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Lifting and pulling up to 50 pounds.
- A generally crisis oriented, secure environment working with adults, some who exhibit aggressive, threatening and assaultive behaviors.
- May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases.
- Entering and movement within the facility will be controlled by Correctional Officers.
- Possibility of cuts, burns, bruises, strains.
- Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
- Employees will be subject to and must comply with all security regulations and procedures of NJ Department of Corrections and the assigned facility(ies) including, but not limited to sign in logs or electronic time clocks, searches of person and property, etc.
- Violations of NJ Department of Corrections and/or being banned by the Department of Corrections to work at a NJ Department of Corrections' facility are grounds for a disciplinary action and potential termination.
