The Division of Safety of Dams is responsible for evaluating the performance of existing jurisdictional dams, reviewing and approving inundation maps for potential breach of dams and their critical appurtenant structures, and reviewing applications for design and construction of a new or existing dams in California. Under the general direction of the Supervising Engineer, Water Resources, the Senior Engineer, Water Resources (Specialist) serves in a lead capacity in highly technical and complex job assignments in the Re-evaluation Engineering Branch. The work includes but is not limited to re-evaluation and risk studies of existing dams and appurtenant structures, applications review for design and construction of new or existing dams, review and approval of inundation maps, and implementation of statutory and regulatory requirements regarding dam safety.

This position requires the incumbent to be experienced in dam engineering and serve as a senior engineer specialist without direct supervisory responsibilities. Effective collaboration, strong communication skills, advanced technical proficiency, situational awareness, consistent and reliable attendance, and adherence to divisional policies and procedures are essential. The individual should interact effectively with divisional staff, dam owners, consulting engineers, and the general public. Tasks may involve occasional on-site visits, including trips to remote locations, and necessitate driving on public roads or in uneven field terrain.
