We are looking for a talented Product Engineering Specialist to join our team specializing in Engineering for our MI, Troy location.

Job Summary:

This product focused position performs established technical tasks at the sub-system and/or component level for current and future products within a given business unit or corporate area. This involves work across many steps in the product life cycle. Because of the product centered nature of this position, they are very often a central point of coordination and decision making between product line engineers, customer teams, systems engineers, purchasing, suppliers and manufacturing.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

Product Development Execution, Monitoring, and Control:

  • Planning and Scheduling: Develop detailed plans and schedules for product development activities.

  • Coordination: Work across different functions to ensure all aspects of the product development are aligned.

  • Execution: Implement the plans, ensuring that the product meets the required specifications.

  • Monitoring and Communication: Track progress and communicate with stakeholders to ensure resources and quality expectations are met.

  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks that could impact the project.

Product Failure Mode Avoidance:

  • Identification: Recognize potential failure modes and their causes.

  • Mitigation: Implement strategies to avoid these failures, improving product reliability.

  • Analysis: Evaluate interfaces, functions, and interactions to prioritize potential failure modes.

Product Function Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis:

  • Utilization of Tools: Use computational tools to model and simulate product functions.

  • Prediction: Predict how the product will perform under various conditions.

  • Design Influence: Use simulation results to make informed design decisions.

Product Interface Management and Integration:

  • Interface Analysis: Identify and analyze the interactions between different system elements.

  • Requirement Specification: Define the requirements and limits for these interactions.

  • Integration Planning: Develop a plan to integrate system elements, ensuring they work together seamlessly.

Product Problem Solving:

  • Process Implementation: Use a structured process to solve product issues.

  • Cause Identification: Determine the root causes of problems.

  • Solution Implementation: Develop and implement robust solutions based on data.

  • Prevention: Identify actions to prevent the recurrence of problems.

Product Verification and Validation Management:

  • Validation Planning: Create plans to validate product systems and identify failure modes.

  • Risk Management: Manage product risks and prioritize validation activities.

  • Requirement Negotiation: Balance product requirements against capabilities to guide project scope.

  • Evaluation: Assess test results to verify product capabilities and validate requirements.

System Requirements Engineering:

  • Requirement Translation: Convert stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements.

  • Acceptance Criteria: Establish criteria for system acceptance through analysis and negotiation.

  • Tracking: Monitor the status of requirements throughout the lifecycle.

  • Impact Assessment: Evaluate the impact of requirement changes on the project.

Technical Documentation:

  • Knowledge Documentation: Record information gained from technical activities.

  • Communication: Share this information with stakeholders to enhance productivity and knowledge transfer.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role, you will need the following:

  • Stakeholder Collaboration : Obtain input from technical managers, project leaders, engineers, and suppliers to make informed product decisions.

  • Decision-Making Skills : Use academic knowledge and experience to make decisions that advance projects without compromising quality.

  • Process Improvement : Apply and enhance processes like Engineering Standard Work (ESW), iDFMEA, and tools such as 7-step problem solving and design review checklists.

  • Project Leadership : Independently lead smaller projects or manage complex components with full accountability to the project team.

  • Work Process Execution : Execute established and emerging work processes and systems while developing technology or product knowledge.

  • Team Coordination : Direct work among technicians and temporary employees and assist in knowledge transfer to less experienced engineers.

  • Technical Guidance : Provide support and guidance to influence technical direction within the project team and develop proficiency in critical competency areas.

  • Specialist Expertise : Operate as a recognized specialist in a specific discipline or product area within the immediate team.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.

  • Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience:

Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS

Overview:

The primary responsibility is to design, develop, test, applicate, and production release axle and suspension products for Non-Drive Front Steer (NDFS) systems. This person will interface with customers, suppliers, test labs, production manufacturing facilities (Cummins Monterrey, Laurinburg, and Oshkosh), and several internal engineering groups (truck axles, brakes, vehicle dynamics, analytical mechanics, experimental mechanics,

The primary responsibility is to design, develop, test, applicate, and production release axle and suspension products for Non-Drive Front Steer (NDFS) systems.  This person will interface with customers, suppliers, test labs, production manufacturing facilities (Cummins Monterrey, Laurinburg, and Oshkosh), and several internal engineering groups (truck axles, brakes, vehicle dynamics, analytical mechanics, experimental mechanics, materials, etc).

Principle Accountabilities:

  • Perform engineering analysis necessary for the production design, application, and testing of axle/suspension components and systems.  This will include the use of CAE tools such as Creo and Simulate.

  • Work with designers to release detailed drawing packages.

  • Manage all aspects of engineering products according to customer requirements with a focus on coordinating project timing, costs, test plans, and prototype builds.

  • Direct communication with external customers on new applications as well as potential field issues.  

  • Establish good working relationships with team members, outside suppliers, customers, and various internal groups.

  • Provide leadership and mentoring for less experienced engineering staff.

  • Identify, verify, and implement solutions to warranty or quality problems that affect product performance.

  • Provide engineering support to the internal manufacturing plant for variance and quality issues.

Requirements:

  • BSME (MSME preferred) with a minimum of 4 years of full-time direct, practical experience.  This should include:

  • experience with Non-Drive Front Steer (NDFS) products and systems

  • experience with axle, suspension integration

  • design experience with structural components (forgings, castings, weldments)

  • Extremely good communication skills of all types are a must

  • Well-versed with all MS Windows software

  • Excellent understanding of static analysis, fatigue analysis and familiar with fundamentals of dynamic and kinematic studies

  • Air travel including driving would be required to visit customers, suppliers, and CDBS plants

  • Minimum 3 days a week on-site for Hybrid work expectation

Compensation and Benefits

Base Salary: 96,000.00 - 144,000.00 USD ANNUAL
