Cincinnati Museum Center (CMC) seeks a dynamic, self-motivated, detail-oriented Manager to lead scientific and public-facing work in the Zoology collections. We are looking for a person to work collaboratively with a variety of departments across our organization, including research and collections, exhibits, education, and philanthropy. CMC is currently planning a major collections move to a newly acquired property – this position will be heavily involved with the planning and development of the new facility, logistical planning and execution of the move, and organization and establishment of the new collections and workspaces. We anticipate 2-3 years for planning/construction, with move of the collections occurring in 2027-2028.

Additionally, the Manager will lead work and engage with partners and guests in CMC’s public-facing DNA Lab, located in the Museum of Natural History & Science. The Manager will build and nurture partnerships with local universities and other scientific institutions who undertake genetic work; manage interns and guests in the space; and engage with the public to share CMC’s genetic research. Although genetics experience is preferred, CMC will train candidates with little or no genetics experience to perform basic lab protocols and supervise students and other users in the lab.

The Zoology Department also manages CMC’s live animal collection. The Collections Manager will assist the Coordinator of Animal Resources to help cover animal care on an as-needed basis.

PRESERVED COLLECTIONS RESPONSIBILITIES (>65%):

CMC’s Zoology Collections include entomology, herpetology, ichthyology, malacology, mammalogy, and ornithology. These collections represent both fluid and dry collections, skeletal material, frozen tissues, and more.

In preserved Zoology collections, the Manager will:

1. Prepare and conserve specimens
2. Care for and maintain collection specimens and spaces
3. Fulfill internal and external loan requests
4. Prepare specimens for exhibit
5. Host visiting researchers in the collections
6. Give guided tours of collections and research areas
7. Train and supervise volunteers and interns
8. Engage with museum visitors
9. Contribute to grant proposals for collections funding
10. Assist with planning and implementation of upcoming collections move

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (<35%):

CMC’s fully equipped DNA Lab makes science visible to guests visiting CMC’s Museum of Natural History & Science and creates engaging opportunities for onsite and digital public science communication. The Manager will:

1. Assist the Zoology Curator with maintenance and operation of CMC’s molecular genetics laboratory, including its DNA sequencers, PCR machines, frozen tissue collections, and associated equipment
2. Prepare/process research samples (from DNA extraction through sequencing)
3. Help train and supervise external partners, students, and interns
4. Regularly engage with the public, enhancing visitor experiences and interpreting Lab activities

In living animal collections, the Manager will work with colleagues to:

1. Help care for and manage live animals, including feeding and daily care
2. Present animal-encounter programs

Qualifications:

1. Background in the biological sciences and experience working in or managing a preserved zoological collection or DNA Lab
2. Experience in live animal care and/or basic laboratory skills a plus
3. Experience with museum exhibits and public engagement a plus
4. Clear, engaging, and thoughtful communication to diverse audiences
5. Dynamic team member
6. Able to work with broad range of people
7. Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s coursework or degree or equivalent work experience preferred

Working Conditions:

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. with assistance, climb stairs and ladders. Typical work week is Monday-Friday business hours; however, some evenings and weekends on occasion for events and programs.

Additional Information:

Full-time, salaried position, with range starting at $43,888 annually. Valid driver’s license required.
