Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Financial Counselor.
In this role, the successful candidate is responsible for assisting patients regardless of insurance coverage or type with understanding and meeting their financial obligations to NYUMC Evaluates patients financial status and coordinates with physician offices to ascertain patients medical needs in order to determine eligibility for hospital based assistance such as alternate payment arrangements and charity care
Job Responsibilities:
    • Promotes the quality and effectiveness of financial counseling services Interviews discharged patients who are unable to pay their bills Reviews applications for completeness and eligibility for specific programs Maintains data and prepares reports related to the outcome of financial counseling activities and decisions Identifies problems and trends and develops recommendations for corrective actions
    • Facilitates the appropriate admission of patients to inpatient services Assesses potential candidates for transfer or admission to Tisch by collecting and reviewing all financial data necessary from patients and their representatives NYU and external physicians hospitals third party payers other agencies as appropriate identifies in collaboration with Patient Access Patient Financial Services and other hospital and physician practice colleagues and contacts patients for Financial Counseling
    • Interprets and helps patients understand insurance coverage Communicates financial requirements to patients including deposit requirements and other obligations Provides information to patients and families regarding their possible eligibility for public or other financial assistance program and assists in completing application for such programs Assesses and responds to needs of patients who have limited financial resources or insurance coverage and assists in arranging alternative financial options for patients through payment arrangements charity or other possible Medical Assistance or payment options Sets up payment arrangements as appropriate
    • Refers patients to financial institutions for alternate payment arrangements and coordinates completion of credit applications Accurately and thoroughly documents assessment on forms and/or in hospital information systems as needed with specific emphasis on facilitating all possible reimbursement allowing for appropriate follow up by PFS/ when necessary
    • Demonstrates a through understanding of all relevant regulatory standards and third party payer criteria by incorporating these standards and criteria in financial counseling and assessments Participates in the education of NYU Medical Center staff and physician practices about regulatory standards and third party payer criteria including the availability and indications for financial counseling and alternative payment sources Learns and communicates the policies and procedures of the NYU Hospitals Center Participates in and initiates as necessary the development and improvement of admission criteria policies and procedures in coordination with department leadership
    • Uses independent judgment and initiative to identify and resolve issues Maintains and continuously upgrades knowledge regarding Medicaid and other government health care payment programs charity care and financial assistance programs available at NYUHC and the regulatory and market environment for these programs Readily accepts new responsibilities and is self directed in seeking new assignments Develops and follows a plan for continuous growth through continuing education reading and consulting with professional colleagues Medical Center staff and faculty
    • Identifies significant problems in intradepartmental and interdepartmental practices related to financial criteria and communications about admissions and issues and proposes potential solutions Uses time management skills effectively to complete all work assignments and adapts to work time/flow changes to meet the needs of the department and hospital Plans work and decision making process to effectively screen candidates for financial counseling and communicate with referral sources promptly
    • Communicates and works as an effective team with all internal and external customers Participates in and provides data for hospital committees and meetings as assigned Communicates verbally and in writing in an effective clear concise and collegial manner Works with Patient Access and Patient Financial Services staff and other departments to promote improvements in communication teamwork and admitting processes and ensure appropriate reimbursement and financial counseling for episodes of care
    • Communicates issues initiatives and trends and any problematic cases requiring administrative intervention to department leadership Cooperates and communicates effectively and harmoniously with supervisors peers physicians NYU Medical Center colleagues patients families and the public in a courteous and professional manner Coordinates with all shifts of Patient Access and Patient Financial Services to complete tasks cooperatively in a timely way to identify and resolve problems as a team
    • Performs other duties assigned

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelor s Degree in Health Administration or Business Administration or related degree 1 2 year in a healthcare related field Evidence of good interpersonal skills effective communication skills written and oral creative problem solving Must possess the ability to handle irate customers physician office personnel and internal staff; work under stressful situations; work independently be self directed; manage teams effectively; and relate effectively with individuals that have widely diversified backgrounds Knowledge of medical terminology Experience with PC use and basic applications such as word processing spreadsheets databases or Internet Ability to review and discuss personal information patient s financial status with high degree of sensitivity Ability to work independently with limited supervision and guidance
Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual fluent in English and Spanish Previous experience with insurance eligibility systems including Medicaid Medicare and other commercial and private payer eligibility systems Excellent knowledge of applicable rules/regulations/guidelines governing traditional insurance coverage and reimbursement Excellent knowledge of applicable rules/regulations/guidelines governing managed care coverage and reimbursement Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency is application of CPT and ICD 9 coding systems

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $62,400.00 - $62,400.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
