Position Summary
The Accountant position works within various department, including the Bursar's Office, Payroll, General Accounting, and Contracts and Grants to create and maintain effective accounting systems and perform complex accounting work. This position ensures compliance with generally accepted accounting practices and CNM policy in executing, analyzing, verifying, and reporting transactions of a fiscal nature, advises management regarding the effective use of resources and methods to maximize earnings, as well as recommends and assists in implementation of systems.
Duties & Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts automated document review with an emphasis on analysis to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of financial reporting.
  • Analyzes financial information and statements to identify discrepancies and escalate issues to management.
  • Performs technical accounting tasks related to various accounting functions such as general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, contract and grant accounting, not-for-profit accounting, and payroll accounting.
  • Executes general accounting duties including journal entries, bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, investment account reconciliations, pre-audits, post-audits approvals, cost allocation, invoice processing, month-end closings, and year-end closings.
  • Audits and reviews student accounts to ensure fee accuracy and analyzes tax forms such as 1098T, 1099, and W2's, ensuring accuracy and understanding reportable transactions for student inquiries.
  • Conducts variance analysis and prepares account reconciliations.
  • Prepares and records entries for assets, liabilities, revenue, and expenses based on compiled and analyzed account information.
  • Maintains and balances subsidiary accounts by analyzing, verifying, allocating, posting, reconciling transactions, resolving discrepancies, and approving transactions.
  • Manages and reconciles fixed asset schedules.
  • Updates, develops, and documents business processes and accounting policies to enhance internal controls.
  • Summarizes financial status by collecting information and preparing financial statements, profit and loss, and other related statements.
  • Produces error-free accounting reports and presents results.
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP principles, federal regulations, and college policies while performing advanced accounting functions.
  • Acts as a coach and mentor for lower-level accounting roles.
  • Assists the CNM health plan with day-to-day activities involving protected health information, adhering to HIPAA Privacy and Security policies and procedures, and performing duties delegated by the HIPAA Privacy or Security Officer.
  • Subject to the requirements of HIPAA and FERPA.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree
  • AND
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) credit of accounting
  • AND up to three (3) years of related experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting
  • Higher Education Experience
  • Experience using WD Finance
  • Degrees in Accounting are preferred
