Design Engineer

You'll be a member of a talented engineering team, contributing to the design of new cutting-edge products. To be successful in this position, you should have hands-on experience using CAD software, with strong attention to detail and a creative flair.

It's also important that you have rock-solid project management skills to meet the daily demands of the role. Be willing to dive in, getting involved and getting your hands dirty during the prototype process. In addition, this position will need a solid foundation of design & drafting techniques and familiarity with engineering terminology and discipline.

The Design Engineer will report directly to the Director of Engineering.

Responsibilities:

  • Design new engineering products and processes for the aftermarket automotive industry
  • Craft models and drawings of products using CAD (Autodesk Inventor / Solidworks)
  • Analyze prototype data using finite element analysis (FEA - static and fatigue) software and retest if needed
  • Research new product ideas and methods
  • Improve existing products and processes
  • Ensure compliance with the industry's safety standards and requirements
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Ensure products are user and environment friendly
  • Write detailed reports, work instructions and SOP's
  • Find creative design solutions to problems
  • Present prototypes and designs to project managers and customers
  • Utilize knowledge of engineering practices, mathematics, strengths of material and other physical science
  • Have a good working knowledge of various machines and production equipment
  • Create DXF files for use on CNC equipment
  • Communicate with cross-functional teams, working closely with Product Management, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality and Operations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily working indoors, office environment
  • Hands on prototype activities, ability to drive vehicles, use of vehicle lift
  • Comfortable using hand and power tools
  • Normal office work setting with some work in dedicated R&D space

Requirements and Skills:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar field with appropriate experience
  • Proven experience using CAD software; knowledge of Autodesk Inventor / SolidWorks is a plus
  • All Microsoft Office software including Project
  • 3D printer experience is a plus
  • 3D laser scanning / CMM experience is a plus (FARO)
  • Experience using Infor XA and Enovia is a plus
  • Good understanding of safety standards and environmental impact of a design
  • Ability to present in front of stakeholders and managers
  • Great computational and spatial ability to solve complex problems
  • Excellent oral and written communication; ability to maintain a professional and pleasant demeanor
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Must be able to work in a team environment
  • Ability to work and handle multiple job assignments; ability to work with and communicate with other departments including Product Management, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality and Operations
  • Ability to sit/stand for long periods daily; position requires some lifting when doing installations on vehicles

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar field with appropriate experience
  • Previous experience in the automotive industry with towing or hitch experience
  • Experienced use of GD&T
  • Lateral thinker

Physical Demands:

  • May sit for several hours
  • Prolonged exposure to computer screens
  • Repetitive use of hands to operate computer, printers and copiers
  • When in R&D areas, assist in prototype development as needed
  • Conduct design reviews in a manufacturing environment around physical prototypes

Travel:

  • Occasional travel to other design and manufacturing facilities
  • Occasional travel to trade shows / seminars
  • Occasional travel for customer visits
