Summary

The Department Manager is a key role responsible for managing the technical, operational, and financial aspects of the Building Inspection Department. Supervising the department’s personnel, business development efforts and performing building inspection and plans examiner duties, as required by business needs. Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  1. Required to drive, stand, walk, use hands to type, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; talk and hear. Body motions and movements include bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, pulling, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and pushing, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  2. Lifting and/or moving up to thirty-five lbs. regularly is expected, on occasion, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  3. On average, the workdays range from seven to twelve hours.
  4. Job site conditions may or may not be accessible by vehicle, including wetlands, swamps, grasslands, and fields with uneven surfaces, sand, brush, and other natural and man-made obstacles.
  5. This job is primarily and regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and construction sites where the noise level is usually moderate to loud.
  6. This is not a remote position. This role will be based on the selected job posting location.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Keeps records of personnel transactions such as timesheets, benefits, new hires, promotions, transfers, performance reviews, and terminations; forwards necessary documentation to the Human Resources Department and/or Payroll for recordkeeping purposes.
  2. Interviews and selects employees to fill vacant positions.
  3. Review clerical and personnel records to ensure completeness, accuracy, and timeliness.
  4. Responds and/or investigates employee inquiries regarding policies, procedures, and programs.
  5. Perform Structural Building Inspection duties (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing as licensed). Inspect commercial and residential buildings under construction or being repaired, remodeled, or enlarged, and are performed during various stages of completion to ensure structural integrity and compliance with building codes/ordinances.
  6. Manages 1-20 building inspectors, plan reviewers, quality control inspectors, and office administrative staff.
  7. Determines whether changes may be required in plans and makes recommendations to contractors, engineers, architects, etc.
  8. Performs inspections of foundations, concrete slabs, framing, roofing, and related construction work when necessary.
  9. Maintains accurate, complete, and current inspection records.
  10. Exercises tact and courtesy when conducting inspections, and communicating with clients.
  11. Prepare reports and report data in a complete, timely, and understandable fashion and return them as required to the branch office.
  12. Complete daily time and labor reports in accordance with company policy.
  13. Ensure that project requirements are met and compliant with inspection specifications, requirements, and company policies or procedures.
  14. Travel to various job sites at locations both locally and throughout the State of Florida.
  15. Regular attendance is required.
  16. Follows safety procedures.
  17. Other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Valid Florida Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record (in accordance with our Driver’s License and Motor Vehicle Record Check Criteria).
  2. Ability to pass a background check screening in accordance with Florida’s Jessica Lunsford Act (or equivalent state classification).
  3. High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  4. State of Florida Standard Building Inspector License (BN) or Building Code Administrator License (BU).
  5. State of Florida Standard 1 + 2 Family Inspector License.
  6. Ability to read & write, including interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, as well as the ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and customers/clients.
  7. Computer skills sufficient to operate a laptop, including sending and receiving emails, and the ability to learn Field Data Collection (FDC)/Inspector Gadget to input data and prepare reports.
  8. Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  9. Reasoning ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form.
  10. Preferred experience managing personnel in an A/E/C firm.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing License.
  2. State of Florida Plan Review Certification (PX).
  3. State of Florida P.E. or Architect License and 3-5 years of related construction experience.
  4. Certified Building Official License (CBO).
