POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. CAPS (Creative Afterschool Program for Success) is our before and after school program located in 39 school sites across San Bernardino.Youth Leaders provide direction for the children and implement program curriculum. They provide a quality experience to children and parents that focus on building relationships while encouraging achievement and belonging.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Assist with supervision of children in order to provide safety within ratios.
  2. Assist with the coordination of staff involvement, daily activities, and field trips.
  3. Able to communicate successfully both verbally and in writing.
  4. Able to assist with solutions to challenging situations by analytical reasoning or research.
  5. Maintain ongoing communication as well as positive relationships with children, parents, staff, community members and organizations.
  6. Develop and collaborate with Site Lead in development of structured lesson plans focusing on educational and enrichment activities.
  7. Carry out effective behavior management techniques in accordance with the YMCA behavior management policies and procedures.
  8. Develop and implement a creative, stimulating and challenging program for children ages 8-13 years old, in accordance with YMCA philosophy.
  9. Visually examine children upon entering program being aware of illnesses, contagious infectious diseases, signs of neglect or abuse.
  10. Assist with ongoing trainings focused on Caring, Honesty, Respect, & Responsibility.
  11. Provide prompt leadership and assistance in emergency situations.
  12. Maintain a professional manner and positive attitude at all times.
  13. Assist the Site Leader and other leadership staff with all other tasks/responsibilities as needed.
  14. Follow the YMCA personnel policies, practices, salary administration plan, emergency procedures and risk management procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. One year experience working with school-aged children in a school program or in other youth-related activities.
  2. Must have completed at least 72 quarter units or 48 semester units at an accredited College or University, or pass the NCLB (No Child Left Behind) examination.
  3. Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate
    program activities. Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
  4. At least one year experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
  5. Understands the YMCA is a public accommodation committed to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  6. Available to work 5 days a week as assigned during program hours (varies by grade level) & must have reliable transportation.
  7. CPR, First Aid, certifications and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of
    hire date. Upon initial hiring, employees are required to obtain current negative TB test, drug test clearance and background clearance.
  8. Must complete 5 module classes with the SBCUSD CAPS central office within 90 days after hire date: 1) Developmental Trends, 2) Building Relationships with Children and Youth, 3) Understanding the Behavior of Children and Youth, 4) Developing Problem Solving Skills & 5) Homework Assistance.

Hours of Operation:
Exact times will depend on school placement.
AM Sunrise Youth Leader 7am - 1:30pm
After School Youth Leader 12pm - 6pm (Monday)
2:20 - 6pm (Tuesday - Friday)
Background Check:
Once a conditional offer is made, candidates will be subject to criminal background check/fingerprinting, drug screen, and physical examinations where required.
