Washington National Primate Center has an outstanding opportunity for a Husbandry Manager to join their team.

The primary purpose of this Husbandry Manager (Manager of Program Operations, E S 8) position, is to provide the appropriate environment to support outstanding biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues and nonhuman primate health and biology. The Washington National Primate Research Center has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Husbandry Manager (Manager of Program Operations) at our Seattle site. This position is responsible for ensuring the husbandry care and welfare of the animals in the Seattle colony is completed in compliance with federal/state regulations and WaNPRC policies, by overseeing the Animal Facility Program Supervisors and working closely with the Behavior Management and Veterinary Services staff. In addition to the oversight of the husbandry staff, this position works closely with the Facilities staff to maintain the Seattle Colony's facilities, equipment and caging. The Husbandry Manager is also responsible for the review and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) pertinent to the Seattle Colony as well as ensuring that the WaNPRC Seattle facilities maintain consistent practices. Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Personnel Management (40%)

  1. Effectively lead and manage the Seattle Colony primate resources care staff to assure proper care of the animal colony, this includes overseeing the animal transport vehicles and animal transportation.
  2. Implement the WaNPRC performance management systems for colony personnel.
  3. Hire, evaluate, promote, and enforce corrective actions for staff.
  4. Provide general supervision of the Animal Facility Program Supervisors.
  5. Develop strong teamwork within the division.
  6. Determine and prioritize training needs for subordinates.
  7. Assure staff are in compliance with training, regarding safety, regulatory issues, and SOPs.
  8. Maintain, review and update SOPs.
  9. Participate in the WaNPRC & University of Washington Emergency Operations Plans.

Facility Maintenance (20%)

  1. Request/tracks repairs and upgrades to equipment and facilities.
  2. Ensure adequate housing space for NHPs is available.
  3. Assist with design and purchase of caging and other equipment.
  4. Assist with facility planning, renovations and modernization.
  5. Act as a liaison between the Facilities staff and Husbandry Staff.

Compliance (20%)

  1. Ensure Compliance with:
  2. Federal and State animal welfare regulations.
  3. University of Washington and WaNPRC policies and procedures.
  4. Assist with regulatory agencies’ inspections and respond to regulatory recommendations.

Administration (20%)

  1. Review Financial Reports (BARs/BSRs) for accuracy.
  2. Certify that payroll is accurate and submit reports within specified deadlines.
  3. Assist in developing budgets, and manage colony expenditures.
  4. Participate in management and leadership development training.
  5. Assure staff are in compliance with training, safety, regulatory issues, and SOPs.
  6. Provide support for the Training and Orientation Coordinator in developing training programs and training record databases.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Science or related field AND 4-5 years of applicable work experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Previous management experience with non-human primate husbandry staff and/or research staff.
  2. Ability to work effectively and with discretion in animal model research setting.
  3. Proven ability to maintain confidentiality in sensitive settings.
  4. Ability to multi-task multiple projects concurrently under deadline pressure and changing priorities.
  5. Ability to work well independently and in team-collaborations with diverse staff and research investigators.
  6. Strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  7. Demonstrated computer literacy with Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and similar applications.
  8. A valid driver’s license and ability to use UW vehicles is required.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  1. At times of high productivity, ability to work outside normal business hours to accomplish operations is required.
  2. AALAS certification at the LAT, LATG or CMAR level; or ability to attain certification within 6-months of employment.
  3. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of health assessment at the UW's Employee Health Clinic.
  4. This position may be required to work with and take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents.
  5. Adhere to the WaNPRC Environmental Enhancement Plan requirements for NHPs.
  6. Participate in the Behavioral Management and Positive Reinforcement Primate Training Programs.
  7. Develop a working knowledge of classical and operant conditioning principles and how they apply to handling primates in a research environment, with positive reinforcement as the expectation.
  8. Develop a working knowledge of non-human primate behavior.
