Job Description:


  • Perform routine blueprint interpretation and technical writing to complete assigned tasks.
  • Utilize tools such as micrometers, height gauges, Vernier calipers, and dividing heads daily to support various tasks.
  • Operate machine tools with varying tolerances, ranging from 0.5 thousandths and above, as required.
  • Conduct non-routine maintenance and repairs on portable machine tools.
  • Regularly use hoisting and rigging equipment for handling heavy items, including forklifts and chain falls.
  • Responsible for determining and applying system tolerances.


Daily responsibilities will include work on the following components:

  • Rudders and steering systems, including blue checking and fitting, piano wire alignment methods, stock straightness assessment, and hydraulic and pneumatic controls.
  • Bearings and bushings, focusing on lubrication types and methods, piano wire fit and alignment techniques, and dial indicator alignment.
  • Engines, motors, and generators, including diesel engines, gas or steam turbines, generators, motors, reduction gears, clutches, PTOs, mounting arrangements, system flushing, and leak testing for heat exchangers (both shell/tube and plate/frame).
  • Propulsion shafting, covering CPP shafting, hydraulic couplings, clearance (water bearings), wear assessments (oil bearings), piano wire alignment methods, dial indicator alignment, FRP spark testing, bearing contact evaluation, and shaft straightness (runout) determination.
  • Seals, including gaskets, packing, "O"-rings, lips and labyrinth seals, mechanical seals, and tightness testing.
  • Valve work, including leak testing, seat types, packing/gasketing/lubrication, lapping, and various seat materials and types.
  • Propellers, including keyed, tapered, flanged, and key fits—both solid and built, CPP systems, and polishing.
  • Pumps, focusing on valving (internal and external), bearing and sealing arrangements, and alignment (using dial indicators and lasers).
  • Deck machinery, including gearboxes, bearing/seal arrangements, alignments, drivers (electric, mechanical, or hydraulic), sheaves, cables, turrets, and booms.
  • Instruct junior machinists, oversee work assignments and personnel management, and requisition job materials.
  • Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to safe handling, use, and storage of gases; implementing safe work practices; utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE); following tank safe opening procedures; practicing lock-out/tag-out; adhering to confined space protocols; ensuring proper respirator/harness fit; and responding to oil spills.

Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with a minimum of seven (7) years of experience as a machinist.
  • Proficiency with manual lathes and mills is essential.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, drawings, and other technical documents related to the trade is necessary.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, and hand-eye coordination are required to execute various projects based on drawings, sketches, and verbal or written instructions.
