The Department of Medicine: Allergy and Infectious Diseases has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Consultant to join their team.
POSITION PURPOSE
The Research Consultant will work with several sexual health clinics across the United States to modernize data systems and data collection tools to improve HIV prevention service delivery. The Research Consultant will also create data reports of key metrics to evaluate and guide the implementation of innovative HIV and STI prevention and treatment initiatives.
This position is essential in leading the development and implementation of data collection processes for continuous quality improvement (QI) and program performance evaluation, including designing and enhancing data collection tools, conducting data analysis and report writing for internal and external partners, and developing abstracts for presentation at national conferences and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. This position ensures that the functional, technical, and operational evaluation protocols for data collection and analysis are appropriately identified, implemented, maintained, and enhanced. This position will also be responsible for managing multiple large, complex data sets, developing data summaries and reports, and improving data management practices, processes, and tools.
POSITION COMPLEXITIES
This position requires a high degree of autonomy, personal initiative, discretion, and flexibility to develop ongoing needs assessments, data collection activities, evaluation, and QI protocols as well as analyzing data to make programmatic recommendations based on findings. The employee in this position must possess knowledge and understanding of the complexities of assessment, evaluation, and QI processes. Complexities include working with regional and national partners, funders, and other users in creating/adapting electronic systems for education and training, registration, and data entry; and responding to ad hoc information requests from federal funders.
This position will report to the PHSKC sexual health clinic medical director and will work extensively with PIs, clinical faculty, and key staff to provide analysis and recommendations to optimize program goals.
POSITION DIMENSIONS AND IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSITY
The UW is strongly committed to developing and expanding partnerships and training in the area of STI and HIV prevention, and to advancing research in these areas. The University of Washington Prevention and Training Center (UWPTC) has been providing training and technical assistance on HIV and STI prevention and treatment to public health departments across the United States for decades. The UWPTC is situated within the UW Department of Medicine, Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, headed by Anna Wald, MD, MPH, one of the premier centers of biomedical, behavioral, and public health-based research in this area, and helps support multiple AID faculty. The UWPTC works closely with the MW AIDS Education and Training Center (MWAETC), the Public Health Seattle & King County STI Program (PHSKC) and the Viral Hepatitis Education Training Project.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Clinical information system development, implementation, and maintenance (50%)
• Lead the development and implementation of a Computer Assisted Self-Intake (CASI) system, in consultation with the Sexual Health Clinic Director(s) and relevant staff.
• Oversee maintenance of the CASI system.
• Develop and implement an information system that integrates clinical data from the electronic medical record and data collected from the computer-assisted self-interview.
• Comprehend and interpret complex data files using data field codes and data dictionaries.
• Support the design of, use, and successfully manipulate large clinical databases for analysis of data (i.e. hospital data, administrative claims data, vital status records, and patient reported survey data).
• Complete complex statistical analysis of data using R, SAS, or STATA.
• Assess and analyze research project aims and milestone goals and provide input in the development of appropriate work timelines based on available data and research databases.
• Provide support and training to staff on the use of the information system.
• Monitor system performance and troubleshoot system issues.
• Monitor data quality and accuracy.
• Coordinate system upgrades as needed. - Data Management (20%)
• Generate database queries/reports using Microsoft SQL, Access, REDCap, and/or Epic.
• Proactively manage databases and acquired data, ensure accuracy of data and participate in quality control activities.
• Develop and validate complex outcome measures and other derived variables based on healthcare data.
• Serve as a liaison between the project team and data vendor/sources to communicate data needs and facilitate data delivery.
• Complete and maintain appropriate regulatory approvals such as data use agreements, human subjects review, as necessary for the position.
• Design, test, and implement methods and formats for data reporting. - Integration of clinical information system into practice (15%)
• Participate in system design and workflow reviews.
• Document processes of information system development and implementation for replication by other sexual health clinics.
• Provide training and technical assistance to other sexual health clinics on the development of computer-assisted self-interviews and information system development and integration. - Technical assistance for sexual health clinics (15%)
• Collect, manage, and analyze data from multiple sexual health clinics.
• Consult with clinics to scale up new and existing data systems to improve data collection and analysis processes.
• Create reports and generate tables, graphs, and data visualizations.
• Report findings to sexual health clinics at regular meetings and as needed.
• Provide excellent customer service to all sexual health clinic personnel.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s Degree in Biostatistics, Health Informatics, Health Services, Epidemiology or a related field. Equivalent experience can substitute for degree requirement. At least three years of experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

• Secondary analysis from existing large data-sets.

• Experience with REDCap, SQL, and relational databases.
• Experience with Epic or other electronic health records systems.
• Experience training others in database creation and management.

• Excellent communication, organization, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Master or Ph.D. degree in Biostatistics, Health Informatics, Health Services, Epidemiology, or related area.
• Experience in complex statistical analysis.
• Experience with R, SAS, STATA, or other coding language.
• Experience with Microsoft SQL & Access.
• Demonstrated ability to participate productively in interdisciplinary research teams.
• Strong quantitative aptitude, desire to learn new skills and information, and ability to interpret complex analytic quantitative information.
• Experience with Epic.
• Experience with scientific writing and interest in making significant content contributions to manuscripts and presentations as well as technical reports for sponsors or partners, especially with presentation and visualization of data.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Collaborative work environment focused on problem-solving, innovation, and service to partner public health agencies. General working hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Flexible hybrid work schedule of on-site and remote work. On-site work in a shared office.
