Company Overview

Silica is a pioneering early-stage company leveraging enhanced rock weathering (ERW) to permanently remove CO₂ from the atmosphere, while improving soil health and increasing agricultural yields. We deploy innovative, scalable carbon removal techniques using silicate rock dust, working closely with farmers across Latin America, starting in Mexico. Silica was recently selected for Frontier’s ‘24 pre-purchases program, securing pre-purchases for carbon removal from Stripe, Shopify and Google.


Position Overview

The Head of Science will shape and drive the scientific and technical aspects of Silica’s ERW projects. You will oversee research and development, field trials, and the deployment of ERW strategies. This role requires a deep understanding of geochemistry, soil science, and carbon removal processes, as well as the ability to translate scientific insights into scalable, practical applications. This is a significant leadership opportunity to advance ERW science, scale CDR and drive sustainable agriculture practices that positively impact local farming communities. 


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee all ERW scientific research and development (R&D) activities
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive research strategy that aligns with the company's mission to maximize carbon removal and improve soil health
  • Collaborate with academic, industry, and government partners to expand the company’s knowledge base and scientific credibility
  • Oversee the design and execution of field trials, laboratory experiments, and modeling efforts to test and refine ERW techniques in diverse agricultural contexts
  • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of scientists, researchers, and technical staff, fostering a culture of innovation, rigor, and collaboration
  • Analyze, interpret, and communicate complex scientific data to inform decision-making and support the company’s business goals
  • Stay at the forefront of advancements in biogeochemistry, soil science, carbon capture, and climate solutions to guide research priorities  and ensure Silica’s projects remain cutting-edge
  • Ensure that all our operations comply with the highest health, safety and regulatory standards


Qualifications

  • PhD or Masters Degree in Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Biogeochemistry, Agronomy, Soil Science, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience leading scientific research projects, preferably within climate or environmental sciences
  • Extensive knowledge of carbon sequestration mechanisms, especially ERW and soil science
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in modeling and interpreting field data
  • Proven track record of successfully collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and engaging with external stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience publishing scientific papers and presenting to diverse audiences
  • Passion for sustainability, climate action, and innovative solutions to environmental challenges


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in agricultural systems or soil amendment practices
  • Familiarity with Latin American ecosystems and agricultural contexts
  • Established connections within the ERW research community, with demonstrated collaboration in related projects
  • Experience with GIS, remote sensing, or other data science tools
  • Spanish proficiency (or willingness to learn)
