Job Summary:

Under general supervision, performs skilled electronics work requiring comprehensive technical knowledge to solve complex problems (i.e. those that typically can be solved by properly interpreting manufacturers' manuals or similar documents). Work requires a high degree of skill in the development, construction, repair, testing, troubleshooting and maintenance of electronic equipment and related devices.

Assistant to primary point of contact in the Electrical Engineering teaching labs. The Electronic Technician solves technical problems on an as needed basis. The Electronic Technician supports the upkeep of teaching lab systems and the inventory of components, tools and devices.

Specific Responsibilities :

  • Consults with and assists faculty and students in planning, layout, construction, and repair of laboratory, clinical, experimental and scientific electromechanical equipment.
    • Report observations and discuss lab planning and recommendations with supervisor.
    • Make improvements to existing lab setups under direction of the supervisor.
  • Designs, modifies, constructs, tests and repairs electronic equipment and systems.
    • Constructs electronic apparatus for course laboratory experiments
    • Maintains electronic records of lab information.
    • Coordinates with NUIT in the maintenance of lab PC systems.
  • Provides preventative & corrective maintenance to electromechanical, electronic, audiovisual, communications, and PC systems. Evaluates condition of equipment to determine if extensive shop repairs are justified.
    • Repairs and calibrates instrumentation equipment as needed.
    • Consults technical manuals and manufacturers for necessary procedures.
  • May supervise and train other electronic maintenance technicians, students and faculty in the use and care of equipment, directing day to day operations of the laboratory or department.
    • Advise TAs & students in the operations of the undergraduate lab environment.
    • Recommend techniques, equipment and tools to them as needed.
  • Provides electronic recordkeeping for lab equipment, including lab course manuals, equipment service manuals & schematics and loaned lab equipment.
  • Maintains electronic inventory of lab system components, tools and devices.
    • Creates electronic databases.
  • Operates standard and specialized equipment and tools while performing laboratory projects.
  • Performs basic laboratory housekeeping tasks.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Electronic trade school and related work experience

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Basic knowledge of electronics and good troubleshooting skills
  • Basic knowledge of and familiarity with through-hole & surface-mount electronic fabrication methods.
  • Basic knowledge of electronic databases.
  • Basic familiarity with computer hardware and software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an electronics/electromechanical trade school or engineering degree program.
  • Practical hands-on experience in industry or military service is helpful.
  • FCC license
  • Electronic Technician Certification
  • Extensive proficiency in the maintenance and repair of PC hardware.
  • Extensive proficiency in the knowledge software.

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and theories of electronics and/or electromechanical technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively locate faults in equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper techniques used to repair or replace faulty electromechanical or electronic components.
  • Ability to complete assignments and responsibilities, with little or no direct supervision.
  • Excellent organizational, communication & time management skills for planning labs on a daily basis.
  • Ability to work well in a diverse environment of people.

Target hiring range for this position will be between $21.48 - $30.21 per hour. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
