JOB SUMMARY: Top Drive Specialist

The Top Drive Specialist is responsible for the efficient installation, maintenance, and repair of top drive systems utilized in drilling operations. This role ensures the optimal performance of top drive equipment, which is critical for safe and effective drilling processes. The specialist will work closely with engineering teams, field operators, and maintenance personnel to support drilling operations.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversee the installation and commissioning of top drive systems in drilling rigs.
  • Ensure all installations are completed according to manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on top drive systems.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues with top drive equipment, hydraulic catwalk as well as the iron roughneck.
  • Perform repairs and replacements as necessary, ensuring minimal downtime.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to field operators regarding top drive operations.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of maintenance procedures and best practices.
  • Adhere to safety regulations and standards, ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Ensure all equipment is compliant with industry standards and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections.
  • Prepare reports on equipment performance, issues encountered, and resolutions implemented.
  • Train field personnel on the operation and maintenance of top drive systems.
  • Stay updated on technological advancements and industry best practices related to top drive systems.
  • Work closely with engineers, rig crew, and other specialists to coordinate efforts and resolve issues.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to problem-solving and process improvement discussions.
  • Work with Maintenance Department and Engineering personnel to ensure proper documentation is completed for items being repaired
  • Maintains clean, organized and safe work environment
  • Responsible for site logistics and material storing
  • Expedite material deliveries upon request
  • Ensure compliance with all established policies and procedures
Working Conditions:
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments and various weather conditions.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Familiarity with top drive systems, including their components and operation.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; technical degree or certification in mechanical or electrical engineering preferred.
  • Experience: 2-5 years of experience in the maintenance, installation, or operation of top drive systems or related drilling equipment.
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Must have valid driver's license
  • Should be able to work closely and collaboratively with fellow employees
  • Must have the ability to work overtime when needed. Rotational work schedule will include holidays, weekends, and possibly nights
  • Physical stamina to handle the demands of the role, including lifting heavy equipment and working in confined spaces.
TRAVEL PERCENTAGE: 100% Field maintenance position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical requirements for positions include bending, hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch crawl, bend, twist, talk, hear and smell.
  • Physical - Continuously standing or walking, bending, climbing, and kneeling. The employee may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Visual/Sensory - This position requires regular need to give moderate attention with one or two senses at a time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
  • Work Environment - Warehouse, yard, and/or office
  • Climate: This position requires the incumbent to have the ability to work in ambient hot and/or cold seasonal environments

LOCATION:
In-person, rig sites, shop and/or warehouse and yard environment working 14 days on duty and 14 days off. Company vehicle provided for rig and vendor travel. Housing provided, if applicable with on-site living quarters or off-site accommodations for the duration of incumbent's work rotation. Individuals could be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions and extreme cold and heat.
