Job Title: Vice President of Finance
Reports To: Chief Administrative and Information Officer
Location: Boston, MA
Position Type: Full-time, 40 Hour per week, Salary Exempt
Pay Rate: $160,000 - $165,000

OVERVIEW:

Heading Home, Inc. is seeking a dynamic and experienced Vice President of Finance to oversee and lead the organization’s financial strategy and operations. Reporting directly to the Chief Administrative and Information Officer (CAIO) and partnering closely with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Chief Development Officer (CDO), the Vice President of Finance will be integral to shaping Heading Home’s financial policy and strategic direction. This role will be responsible for all aspects of financial administration, business planning, and budgeting, and will work collaboratively with the executive leadership team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Leadership

  • Partner with the CEO, COO, and CDO on operational and strategic issues; provide financial analysis and projections to assist team in making informed strategic decisions.
  • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management to support the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Assist in creating presentation for the board finance committee addressing financial issues, trends, and changes in the operational model.

Financial and Operational Management

  • Direct budgeting processes and the implementation of budgets; monitor financial progress and present metrics internally and externally.
  • Ensure financial record-keeping systems adhere to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and monitor fund usage.
  • Oversee the preparation of financial reporting materials for funding organizations and the board of directors; prepare and communicate monthly and annual financial statements.
  • Manage cash flow and forecasting; oversee all financial, project-based, and departmental accounting activities.
  • Coordinate all audit activities and ensure compliance with grant requirements and loan covenants.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Lead and manage finance staff, including the Director of Finance, Accountants and Accounts Payable Associate.
  • Collaborate with senior management team members, including Program Operations, Real Estate & Maintenance, HR, and Data & Research, to ensure cross-departmental alignment.
  • Provide guidance on attracting and developing key team members, fostering a high-performance, service-oriented finance department.

Operational Excellence

  • Oversee and enhance accounting operations, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in financial processes.
  • Act as the primary liaison with contract managers, banking representatives, investment advisors, and other key stakeholders.
  • Develop and refine fiscal systems to support organizational growth and effectiveness.
  • Lead the annual budget process, ensuring a collaborative approach and comprehensive financial planning.

Work Environment

  • Office environment with Office space within a large building requires sitting at a desk and working on a computer, as well as occasional standing and climbing stairs.
  • Position requires a minimum of four days onsite.

EXPERIENCE / SKILLS / QUALIFICATION REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, or related field; CPA/CMA a plus, MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of broad financial experience with at least 5-7 years in a leadership role. Nonprofit experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrated excellence in financial management, budgeting, control, and reporting.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate strategic vision into operational models.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (NetSuite preferred) and advanced technology skills, especially with Excel.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written, with a collaborative and flexible style.

  • Experience with state and federal contracts a plus
