What is this job about?

The Tax Specialist is responsible for providing proactive support for tax information requests from the organization, clients, and CPAs. Analyzes and verifies data for Form 1099 client reporting. Assists with the review of trust tax returns through use of the Tax Controls program. As part of the Tax team, plays a role in the completion of tax deadlines and various monthly and ad-hoc projects requested by Tax Leadership. This role can be located in Grand Rapids, MI or Kalamazoo, MI.

What will you do?

  • Serve as a tax resource for the organization and outside engaged CPAs
  • Interact with outsourced managed service provider to ensure 1099 processing is timely and accurate
  • Analyze data for tax processing and assists Tax Leadership in reviewing Form 1099 reporting for clients
  • Provide proactive updates on tax processing status to the Client Centric Team
  • Assist with required minimum distribution (RMD) questions and general tax questions
  • Assist Tax Leadership in reviewing Form 1041 for trusts within expected parameters
  • Support the Estate Settlement Team in tax return review and tax processing
  • Review the dissemination of various reporting and tax returns for mailing to clients and filing with the Internal Revenue Service and/or appropriate taxing authority
  • Engage with the Internal Revenue Service and state taxing authorities as needed
  • Responsible for tracking of legislative changes in tax laws and regulations and communicating those changes to the Client Centric Team
  • Present quarterly training to internal client-facing team members and assists in the professional development of Tax Coordinators
  • Provide support for client gift processing

What do you need to be successful?

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field or equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum of two to three years of Trust and Estate Tax experience required
  • IRA experience required
  • Actively pursuing CPA and/or EA
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Outlook, and Excel applications
  • Familiarity with trust accounting software and data warehouse highly desired
  • Familiarity with OneSource Trust Tax software highly desired
  • Exceptional history of proactive customer service
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Effective project management skills
  • Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language
  • Utilizes proven methods of organization and time management
