Overview

Interstates is seeking a Senior Design Manager for our Omaha location. In this role, you will oversee and manage multiple client and project team relationships, ensuring the successful scoping and delivery of projects. You will be actively involved throughout the entire project lifecycle, including pursuit, proposal, design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and support phases. As the Senior Design Manager, you will advocate for client and owner requirements, particularly on complex Design-Build projects, where you will serve as the Integrated Project Manager (IPM). This position requires you to be a technical design and preconstruction leader, making key decisions both externally with clients and internally with project teams.

Additional Information: The pay range for this position is $117,600-$147,000+ benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by the experience and education required, and level of responsibility. The range posted for this role represents a range that Interstates, in good faith, believes it is willing to pay at the time of this posting. The pay is determined by job related skills, training, education, and experience.

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Leading and supporting multiple client/owner relationships.
  • Setting proposal strategy, analyzing received information, discovering client goals, supporting the estimating effort, determining design scope, and leading the proposal team to deliver proposals.
  • Understanding the scope of the project's work by reviewing project specifications, contracts, and agreements and any clarifications and exceptions in the proposal.
  • Acting as the primary design and preconstruction contact with the client/owner to establish design parameters, answer technical questions, and problem solve design solutions by understanding scope and goals.
  • Defining the deliverables necessary to achieve the project scope and aligning the design team to deliver a constructible design that meets the client/owner needs and budget constraints.
  • Functioning as the Sr. Project Manager to set project design and preconstruction goals, develop the project schedule, solve project issues, and complete progress updates including tracking constraints, and communicating with the team.
  • Managing all professional services for the project, including both internal and external resources for any disciplines involved in Interstates’ scope.
  • Providing technical leadership for the project internally and externally by regular supporting and mentoring of all design team members.
  • Identifying gaps in skills or capabilities of the project team and aligning resources or training to fill the gaps.
  • Working in conjunction with the construction team to deliver the overall project by setting direction and managing the design objectives throughout the project.
  • Owning the final quality of Interstates’ design deliverables by ensuring quality processes, audits, and reviews are completed to internal standards and external satisfaction.
  • Engaging in Construction Administration activities to support the client/owner and construction team in executing the project in alignment with the design intent.
  • Maintaining multiple client/owner relationships by regularly checking in with them during and outside of active projects.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Owning and driving the Interstates Collaborative Design Process, to ensure the team has all required information and data to properly support and execute the project.
  • Fulfills multiple leadership roles as assigned (Ex. delivery team, client team or lane leader)
  • Manages the full scope of responsibility in accordance with Interstates’ PM
  • Drives strategic planning and issue processing meetings.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or the construction field is preferred.

The Senior Design Manager:

  • Must have experience in the engineering and construction industry.
  • Typically, must have at least ten years of experience working directly with clients/owners on the delivery of design or design-build projects.
  • Should have experience managing multiple levels of stakeholders in the delivery of projects.
  • Should be familiar with multiple engineering disciplines with emphasis on electrical and automation.
  • Should be familiar with navigating, assessing, and giving input into complex project schedules.
  • Should be familiar with preconstruction activities that take place on large engineering projects.
  • Should have experience of managing different teams that are not co-located to deliver a unitized design.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment but may involve exposure to moderate noise levels from high-speed computer printers and other peripherals. Work involves operation of personal computer equipment for extended periods of time. Occasional travel to various worksites may also be required, depending on the assignment.

Must adhere to the rules of construction while on the construction site. Hard hat, safety glasses provided by Interstates.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Travel is expected as project needs arise but will be less than 35% overnight travel.
