The Oncology Division in the Department of Internal Medicine (DOIM) in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) seeks an exceptional oncology leader to serve as the Chief for the Oncology Division. This is a remarkable opportunity for a dynamic academic leader to further the growth, innovation, and diversity of this vibrant program’s clinical, research, educational, and other programmatic missions.
The Oncology Chief will work closely with the DOIM Chair and HCI leaders to promote a collaborative environment that enhances clinical growth and academic development and advances research consistent with Department, HCI, and Institutional missions. The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader who promotes institutional stewardship throughout University of Utah Health and the University of Utah.
Competitive candidates will have a track record of accomplishment as an academic oncologist, as evidenced by practicing and excellence in clinical oncology, original contributions to oncology research, national and international visibility, a history of research funding, and progressive leadership and administrative experience.

Minimum Qualifications: ABIM Board certification in oncology, academic tenure experience as an Associate Professor or Professor, and eligible for a Utah Medical License.
Preferred Qualifications : National or international research reputation, clinical leadership, and progressive administrative experience.

The University of Utah Health has ranked in the top 10 of the prestigious Vizient Quality Leadership Award for the last 13 years. The University of Utah is also a Top-Tier 1 research (R1) institution and a member of the Association of American Universities. Its research funding was $768 million in FY23. The Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine had $312 million in funding this year with the departments of Internal Medicine (DOIM) and Pediatrics contributing over $113 million, followed by the departments of Biochemistry and Neurology contributing over $42 million.
For more than seventy-five years, the DOIM has had a rich history of providing excellent care, quality research, and valuable education in Utah. DOIM is a collaborative Department, with strong partnerships among divisions, across departments, and with the VA Hospital and HCI. Further, the DOIM has a strong research focus ranked 36th for all institutions, and 17th for state/public universities, with $45.3 M in total NIH funding in 2022. The DOIM has also seen double-digit clinical growth for several years.
HCI is an NCI -Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), supporting and fostering a vibrant cancer research enterprise in a highly collegial environment. HCI has an outstanding history of academic achievement and impact, with $122K extramural grant funding in FY2023, an “exceptional” rating at the last two NCI reviews, a highly collaborative environment, a positive and supportive culture, and a strong commitment to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, training, community engagement, and service.
The Division of Oncology is one of twelve divisions within the Department of Internal Medicine (DOIM). The faculty and advanced practice clinicians cover the entire spectrum of oncology and are dedicated to high quality, value-driven patient care, education, and innovation and discovery through basic, clinical, population, and health services research. The Division Oncology is integrated in the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI), an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center serving the five-state Mountain west and beyond. The DOIM and HCI are undergoing major expansions of their clinical and research operations and are committed to supporting the growth of the Oncology Division through recruitment of new clinical, translational, and laboratory-based faculty. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to participate in and ultimately take a lead role in multidisciplinary clinics and in developing clinical-research programs within a growing translational research initiative, fully integrated with or within the multidisciplinary teams at our main campus location.
Clinical activities in the Division of Oncology are supported by thirty physicians and twenty-seven advanced practice clinicians who provide outpatient and inpatient patient care services at four locations in the Salt Lake Valley including HCI and the University of Utah Health’s community clinics in South Jordan, Sugarhouse and Farmington. Clinical activities include specialty programs such as the Huntsman Acute Care clinic, Supportive Oncology & Survivorship (SOS), Family Cancer Assessment Clinic (FCAC), and Geriatric clinic, among others. Outside of the valley, the Division provides outreach services at the affiliate hospitals of Madison Memorial in Rexburg, Idaho, and St. John’s Health in Jackson, Wyoming.
The Division of Oncology has one of the most robust clinical trials research programs in the DOIM and at HCI. HCI offers state-of-the-art laboratories, including a 225,000 sq. ft. research building which opened in the summer of 2017 and doubled the Institute’s research space. Research activities in the Division are supported by $17M in FY23 of annual extramural research funding through federal, association/foundation and industry awards. In FY22, the Division of Oncology accounted for 45% of all Industry Trials, 48% of all Investigator Initiated Trials (IITs), and 46% of NCI and Cooperative Group Trials at HCI. Further, in the last few years the Division has made an investment in our Translational Research Program by hiring five MD/PhD researchers. Clinical research is supported by the HCI Clinical Trials Office, Biospecimen and Molecular Pathology Shared Resource, numerous other Shared Resources across HCI and the University of Utah, and disease-specific clinical databases. The Utah Population Database affords unique opportunities for oncology researchers interested in population-based genetic research, an area of great research strength at the University of Utah.
The Oncology Division is highly committed to the education of fellows, DOIM house staff, PhD postdoctoral fellows, and students. Attracting and training clinicians and researchers are integral to its education mission. Educational activities in the Division of Oncology include a combined Oncology/Hematology Fellowship program consisting of twelve fellows. The University of Utah offers excellent graduate programs for training PhD and MD/PhD students, and a Physician-Scientist Training Program (PSTP) in the DOIM.
