Gas System Planning Engineer – Gas Distribution Planning

We are seeking a Gas System Planning Engineer to join our Gas Distribution Planning group. Our team of talented engineers is responsible for providing operational support, engineering, and planning services for Colorado Springs Utilities natural gas distribution infrastructure comprised of more than 5,000 miles of gas mains and services. The work that you do will directly impact the current and future safety and reliability of Colorado Springs’ natural gas infrastructure through working on advanced planning projects.

How will you make an impact?

You will serve as a project technical lead for complex and future growth projects including:

  • Leveraging knowledge of PHMSA Regulation 49 CFR 192 for gas distribution systems

  • Developing high-level scope, schedule and budget project estimates for various projects including gate station upgrades, low/medium/high-pressure

  • pipeline replacements or extensions

  • Performing analysis on the natural gas distribution system utilizing Synergi Gas modeling software for short- and long-term prospective projects

  • Utilizing the Synergi code environment for custom applications and processes

  • Developing natural gas system master plan

  • Reviewing new construction and main replacement designs, including development of construction sequence and tie in procedures

  • Evaluating elevated pressure requests and sizing excess flow valves and/or bypasses

  • Planning, identifying, budgeting, and managing projects for system reinforcements

  • Performing system analysis for operational needs and power generation

  • Sizing District Regulator Sets for current and future capacity needs

  • Supporting Colorado Springs Utilities’ gas initiatives related to system supply, standards, and compliance

  • Providing support for future projects and studies including the development and review of business cases, alternative solutions, cost estimation and risk analysis

  • Developing reports and analysis on the performance of the gas system over the heating season

  • Determining operational feasibility of Natural gas power generation plants in transient and non-transient scenarios

In addition to supporting the success of key projects, you will also make an impact in the following ways:

  • Providing technical expertise and training on gas industry best practices and Part 192 compliance to crews, field engineering, standards, and junior gas planning engineers

  • Reviewing and approving field engineering drawings, 150P designs, and project contractor designs to ensure Part 192 code compliance

  • Providing future planning analysis and backup modeling updates

  • Developing and maintaining our technical Gas Planning manual

Who you are…

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required

  • Relevant and progressively responsible experience with and knowledge of natural gas pipeline projects and design standards

  • Knowledge of distribution pipeline practices, procedures, and operating standards

  • Knowledge and understanding of federal and state pipeline safety regulations, including Title 49 CFR Part 192

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) and Professional Engineer (PE) certifications are highly valued

  • Ability to take initiative and drive projects forward, and adapt quickly to changing construction and project needs

  • Sound critical thinking and decision-making ability, as well as strong attention to detail

  • Strong interpersonal skills that establish effective relationships
