CLASS TITLE: Students in Temporary Living Situations Advocate
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: In accordance with the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, and under the supervision of the school principal, performs homeless liaison functions between the school and the community in which the school is located and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The primary responsibilities for the Students in Temporary Living Situations Advocate include working with families to determine STLS status, enrolling students in school and in the STLS program, and distributing bus cards to students. These employees are also responsible for maintaining on-going communications with STLS students and families and providing these families with referrals to District and community resources that may address barriers to enrollment, attendance, and success in school.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited educational institution with a Bachelor degree preferred, or successful completion of two years of college-level course work at an accredited college or university, supplemented by four years of progressively responsible experience in community or social service organization; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Previous experience working with homeless families is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Strong roots in the community and experience supporting students and caregivers struggling with housing instability. Good knowledge of community organizations and social service agencies, knowledge of CPS and Federal regulations. Ability to develop strong working relationships with students and caregivers. Empathy for the struggles and needs of our students. Ability to work with various and diverse community organizations and members; ability to prepare routine written reports; ability to recognize and respond to community and parents' concerns and educational interests. Good human relations skills; excellent oral communication skills; good writing skills.
