Description
Job Title: College Counselor
Department: College Counseling
Reports to: Director of College Counseling
Location: CATS Academy Boston
Main Responsibilities:
- Advise a caseload of 11th, 12th, and PG students as they explore post-CATS opportunities.
- Monitor individual student progress throughout the college application process.
- Engage students in a personalized process of self-assessment and exploration.
- Provide guidance/support/feedback/insight on application materials, essays, and pathway-specific requirements.
- Guide students and others in understanding and utilizing Naviance/Maia Learning, the college admission data
management system. Provide guidance and resources and teach tools to navigate the college search and application process.
- Educate students on appropriate interviewing techniques, self-assessment tools, and application essay writing techniques.
- Follow up as appropriate via email, telephone, and/or Zoom/Teams (Students, Staff, Families).
- Write detailed letters of recommendation for assigned students and submit supporting materials for applications.
- Coordinate/present workshops, information sessions, and special events, including the school-wide spring college fair.
- Liaise with college admissions representatives and organize on and off campus meetings for CATS students.
- Maintain information on standardized tests (SAT, PSAT, ACT, English Proficiency Exams).
- Work/collaborate with our test-prep partnership to provide information about testing options and preparatory classes
- Assist with AP exam organization/proctoring.
- Organize and deliver post-secondary success workshops and events for all grade levels.
- Assist/educate newly transferred seniors who are enrolled in our summer "College Counseling Preparatory Program"
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Administrative and Additional Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Registrar, Academics, and Admissions to manage transfer transcripts.
- Participate in student community engagement activities, such as serving as a faculty advisor or chaperoning events.
Collaboration, Professional Development, and Training:
- Collaborate with colleagues to create a positive educational environment.
- Attend faculty, staff, and department meetings, as well as professional development and training programs.
- Pursue professional development opportunities and display a willingness to learn and grow within the School Counseling field.
Skills & Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree required (Master's preferred) with 2+ years of experience in college counseling or related field.
- Knowledge of colleges, admission policies, and financial procedures.
- Proficiency in Naviance/Maia Learning software, Google platform, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong collaboration, leadership, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Cultural competence in working with diverse populations.
- Experience or interest in working with international students and families.
