Position Summary

Mesabi Metallics is looking for a Coordinator- Safety who will be responsible for ensuring the safety and health of employees across mining and plant operations. This role involves developing and overseeing safety programs, conducting inspections, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, including those set by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and fostering a culture of safety throughout all operations. The Coordinator - Safety will work closely with the Safety Manager, employees, and contractors to identify hazards, implement preventive measures, and address safety concerns effectively.

Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Safety Manager, the Coordinator – Safety will be responsible for the following:

  • Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive safety programs for mining and plant operations, ensuring compliance with MSHA regulations and other relevant standards.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of mining sites, processing plants, and related facilities to identify and address potential hazards.
  • Ensure that safety policies and procedures are adhered to and recommend improvements as needed.
  • Assist Safety Manager with the design and delivery of safety training programs for employees, including new hire orientation and ongoing refresher courses.
  • Stay current with industry standards, best practices, and regulatory changes to incorporate into training and safety protocols.
  • Assist or lead safety drills, emergency response exercises, and safety meetings to reinforce safety practices.
  • Assist with Investigation of accidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions to determine causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety incidents, investigations, and follow-up actions.
  • Report safety performance, incidents, and regulatory compliance to management and relevant authorities.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and industry standards for both mining and plant operations.
  • Prepare and submit required safety documentation and reports to regulatory agencies and management.
  • Assist in preparing for and managing external safety audits and inspections.
  • Act as a safety liaison between Safety Manager, employees, and contractors, addressing safety concerns and fostering a safety-oriented culture.
  • Promote open communication regarding safety issues and encourage employees to report unsafe conditions.
  • Collaborate with various departments to integrate safety practices into daily operations and project planning.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in a safety role within both mining and plant operations.
  • Relevant safety certifications, including MSHA certification, are advantageous (e.g., Certified Safety Professional (CSP)).
  • In-depth knowledge of MSHA regulations, safety standards, and best practices for mining and industrial plant environments.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in both mining and plant environments, including exposure to dust, noise, and varying weather conditions.
  • Capability to perform physical tasks, such as lifting, inspecting equipment, and navigating uneven terrain.
