Department Summary

The UCLA Fielding School of Public Health’s Department of Biostatistics is home to a stellar team of national and international leaders in a wide range of cutting-edge fields, including Bayesian methods, big data, causal inference, statistical computing, data science, functional data analysis, statistical genetics, hierarchical models, HIV/AIDS, image analysis, longitudinal data analysis, multivariate data, phylogeny, spatial statistics, survival analysis, and optimal design. This powerhouse of expertise is dedicated to preparing critically thinking graduates with strong, highly marketable skills through our four biostatistics degree programs: Master of Data Science in Health (MDSH); MPH in Biostatistics; MS in Biostatistics; and PhD in Biostatistics.
Position Summary

The Department of Biostatistics is seeking a dynamic and self-directed project coordinator for their Master of Data Science in Health (MDSH) program during a pivotal phase. Launched in fall 2023, the MDSH Program provides advanced training in data management, data analytics, statistical modeling, machine learning, and big data computing for public health professionals. The program is designed for working professionals, with classes held remotely during the week, and in-person one weekend a month at the UCLA campus. This position reports to the Associate Director and works alongside the Student Affairs Officer. This position is an integral part of a small but growing team. They will contribute to the day-to-day operations, planning, tracking, organizing, and coordinating many aspects of the MDSH program including student events such as graduation. The incumbent will improve upon activities, create Standard Operating Procedures, and utilize project management tools and skills. They will coordinate MDSH seminars and other events and contribute to marketing and communications via social media, email, recruitment events, and university channels. They will represent the program to industry partners and play a pivotal role in launching and coordinating the capstone projects, which pair student groups with data science companies. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment, have excellent communication skills with a variety of audiences, be an excellent problem solver, and be highly organized. This position requires working in person on class weekends (approximately 9 weekends per academic year; see MDSH website). There is the opportunity to work remotely 1 day per week initially and potential for more in the future.

Qualifications

  • Two plus years of directly related experience (Required)
  • Working knowledge of UCLA systems, policies and procedures and appropriate application. (Required)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills in order to convey information to individuals at all levels within the University community and data science industry, including ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality. (Required)
  • Proven ability to work efficiently and effectively with great attention to detail in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with multiple priorities, frequent interruptions, shifting demands. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to establish rapport, address issues and concerns, build a positive work atmosphere, and gain the trust of others, including working as part of a team and maintaining cooperative working relationships. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of applicable software, applications, and programs such as: Canva, Adobe (optional), Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Later.com, basic video editing. (Required)
  • Knowledge of core functions, essential services, and career opportunities of public health, data science, and healthcare. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, research, and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail. (Required)
  • Effectively communicate technical information to non-technical audience and academic requirements to the external stakeholders and industry partners, accurately and tactfully exchanging information, and explain procedures clearly and logically. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to use internet-based software programs: Zoom, Canva, Slack, Google or Microsoft forms, Qualtrics, etc. and Microsoft software including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.Working knowledge of applicable software, applications, and programs such as: Canva, Adobe (optional), Instagram (Required)
  • Experience coordinating a variety of small and large-scale events.Experience creating marketing and communication materials and conducting outreach. (Required)
  • Capable of creating surveys to capture program outcomes and stakeholder satisfaction and subsequently analyzing results and writing up findings and guiding programmatic decisions based on data. (Required)
  • Project coordination skills: understanding projects' goals and objectives; ability to effectively collaborate with a team on program implementation; ability to maintain communication systems; ability to recognize, address, and overcome program challenges. (Required)

  • Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Master's Degree in Data Science, Biostatistics, Public Health, Education or related area (Preferred) Or
  • Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Biostatistics, Public Health, Education or related area or equivalent combination of education and experience (Required)
