Join Our Team as a Tool Design Engineer Intern!
Are you passionate about tool design engineering? S&C Electric Company is seeking a dynamic individual to coordinate our NJC Laboratories. As an Tool Design Engineer Intern, you'll be crucial in ensuring smooth operations and supporting our diverse team.
The Tool Design Intern will assist Tool Design Engineers in department activities related to new tooling requests, conducting design investigations, initial concept development, participate in design reviews and creating design documentation. Other tasks will include assisting in revising existing designs and updating documentation, providing design information to Tool Room personnel, documenting legacy tool designs, problem solving tooling issues and continuous improvement of process, tools and equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Solve design and manufacturing related problems through use of fundamental engineering calculations and theory.
  • Work closely with team members to support the continuous improvement of processes, tools/equipment, and manufactured products by participating in problem solving activities.
  • Routinely collect and analyze process data using statistical tools.
  • Conduct experiments and write clear, concise engineering test reports describing the test procedures, results, analyses, and conclusions
  • Work closely with operations team to create instruction bulletins for standard work practices with regards to tooling/processes.
  • Work closely with design engineering team to design new tools and fixtures.
  • Design tool models using CAD software.
  • Create documentations such as drawings and specifications relevant to projects.

What you'll Need To Succeed:
Job Requirements ( To select this job at a minimum you must have the following):
  • Must be in good standing as a student at the bachelor's degree level at an accredited university majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or a related major and returning to school full-time after the work session.
  • Comfortable commuting to and working onsite at S&C Electric HQ in Rogers Park, Chicago IL.
  • Ability to work Full-Time in Summer 2025 for a minimum of 10 weeks.
  • Ability to think analytically, independently, and outside of the box to provide fresh ideas to improve processes.
  • Ability to work with people in a production/plant environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of PC using Microsoft Office.
  • Intermediate to advanced CAD skills and ability to read drawings.

Major Physical Demands
  • Standing: Occasional standing on production floor for troubleshooting or equipment startup.
  • Lifting: Occasional lifting of production parts and tooling less than 50 pounds.
  • Walking: Frequent walking throughout the facility both indoors and outdoors.
  • Carrying: Occasional carrying of light objects such as measuring equipment, prints, etc.
  • Pushing: Infrequent pushing of objects, possibly related to production support, startup work.
  • Pulling: Infrequent pulling of objects, possibly related to production support, startup work.
  • Bending: Occasional bending during production support, startup work.
  • Reaching: Infrequent reaching.
  • Handling: Occasional handling of parts or tools.
  • Other: Frequent use of personal computer, keyboard, monitor.
