Salary: £250 Per Annum
Hours: Full Time
Type: Permanent
Job Requirements / Description

Atomic Machines is on Earth to radically advance humanity’s command over matter. Our mission is real-time bits-to-atoms manufacturing of anything at any scale, and to that end, we’re developing an entirely new digital micro-device manufacturing platform that is going to redefine how things are made, and do so while simultaneously enabling the rapid creation at any scale of new classes of machines – think medical micro-robotics, true lab-on-chip microfluidics, tunable antennas, ultrafast high-power and high-frequency RF switching devices and many more. The first device we are building with our platform has exceptional large-scale product/market fit and commercial traction, and we are pushing hard to share it with the world.

Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.

About the role:

Based in Berkeley or Santa Clara, this senior leadership role is one of the most pivotal and technically broad at Atomic Machines. Reporting directly to the VP, Device & Process Engineering, you will be the executive responsible for the development of Atomic Machines' digital manufacturing "Nodes," each of which implements a class of physical manufacturing process, as a fully automated digital machine built upon our robust hardware and software platform that enables sophisticated interaction with all other Nodes, ultimately manifesting in the Matter Compiler (MC). You will lead a team of exceptional principal-level mechanical engineers (both ICs and ICMs) to design and build the Nodes -- from initial prototypes and DoEs through to commercial readiness -- required for the launch of our first product and beyond, and your team will work in the context of our fully operational Hybrid Fab, which provides a unique agile development/deployment environment for all aspects of the MC. Importantly, we are growing rapidly, and you will play a key role in further building out the team with additional bar-raising talent.

What You'll Need:
  • 10+ years of experience as a hands-on mechanical engineer, designing and building complex dynamic systems, with a strong preference for experience with precision systems and systems that automate a physical process with demonstrated repeatability.
  • 8+ years in a highly technical managerial role with a proven track record of building and leading high-performance mechanical engineering teams in a cross-functional environment.
  • Demonstrated success in leading a team of engineers through the development of a complex and respectable product from concept to market.
  • Substantial experience recruiting and hiring exceptional senior/staff/principal-level mechanical engineers.
  • Given the multi-physics and multidisciplinary nature of what we are doing, you will need strong curiosity coupled with a propensity to rapidly ascend learning curves in areas new to you.
  • Excellent ownership behavior to internalize company goals and needs and then shape reality to your plans to achieve those goals, whether through innovating out of technical boxes, hiring engineers on to the team, working with the broader leadership team to develop strong plans, rapidly experimenting to find answers to outstanding questions and more.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills including presentation of technical content.
  • Passion for startup environments and able to adapt to changing needs and priorities.
  • Intellectually honest and highly trustworthy.
  • At least a B.S. in mechanical engineering.
What You'll Do:
  • Internalize and contribute to the Matter Compiler architecture, associated system model simulation / digital twins and details of our first micro-device.
  • Lead the engineering team to design/build/deploy all Nodes required for manufacturing of our first device at high volume.
  • Provide high-quality management to team members (primarily principal-level ICs and IC managers) to consistently execute with high performance against company goals and in alignment with company values.
  • Establish organizational growth plan based on company goals and hire exceptional engineers and engineering leaders into the team per the plan.
  • Drive out “white space” in development efforts and utilize our unique Hybrid Fab environment to develop Nodes in a truly agile fashion, working within the company’s Product Development Process (PDP).
  • Our engineering leaders are deeply technical themselves, and in the details of the work, they represent their teams extremely well and play a key role in technical problem-solving.
